Goodbye to the Walt Disney World Speedway and Richard Petty Driving Experience

We were thinking of doing this for DH and going in mid June so we might be okay since article says late June. Thanks for posting!

I would call and see if they have a concrete closing date because Disney posted that it will be closing mid June

Even though I am a NASCAR fan and have done the Petty Driving Experience up at Charlotte, I never really saw the purpose or need for either the driving experience or the race track within WDW. To me it just did not fit the Disney theme and seeing it close is not the worst thing in the world.

Years ago, there were several races held there each year. After I think the 3rd or 4th season, the contract with Disney was not renewed. They used to hold both truck and car racing there.

The problems I had with it being where it was, was that in order to have the races in the first week or so of January, they had to take the last 3 parking lots out of use, and put up the bleachers. This started in about the beginning of November. So, in the busiest time of year, if you were unlucky enough, you would have to park at Epcot and take the monorail back to the MK. It was real inconvenient. Plus you could hear the cars in the MK. It would have been better off nearer to the Sport Complex. There was plenty of room up there for it.

Considering that the area that the track sits on used to be parking, Im surprised that with the number of times that the MK lot closed due to capacity, that they didn't close the track sooner.

Any chance Tomorrowland Speedway is next?
That thing needs a major overhaul or replacement.

Can someone tell me where this is geographically in Walt Disney World? I've never seen it and am curious as to what they might do with the area.

Nevermind. Found it. Looks like it is near the Transportation and Ticket Center. No idea what they would re-purpose that area as... unless it is another DVC property.
