We went to WDW over Veteran's Day weekend. It was to celebrate my younger DSs 5th B-day! We went w/ my Uncle CheshireFigment and my hubby and older DS (7). Older DS is ADHD and w/ his meds we had no problem w/ him. Well... at least nothing that you don't expect from just about any 7 yr. old boy in an environment like WDW! LOL!
Younger DS is on the spectrum, HFA, he was diagnosed when he was just over 2 yrs. old and has been getting services ever since. He's in a PK program right now and is THRIVING!
Anyways, we noticed on day one that Vinny kept his fingers in his ears for the most part, he didn't really enjoy the rides as much as he could have. He did take the fingers out of his ears for character meet and greets, he needed both hands for big hugz and lovin'!
Well, the next morning before we hit the World again we stopped at a Wal Mart and got Vinny a pair of earmuffs, the kind shooters use on the range. Once Vinny figured out what they did for him all was different! At first he kept them on and we got a little worried that he wouldn't want to take them off, but we were wrong! After he got used to them he'd take them off when he felt comfortable amd then indicate if he wanted to use them! And for Illuminations at EPCOT those earmuffs worked AWESOME! :-)
I'd recommend them for anyone w/ sound issues!!!
Vinny also had a little breakthrough! We had some time to kill before dinner ressie was ready so I thought we'd ride 'Soarin. But no.... Vinny tugged on my hand and said "No 'Soarin!" I asked him what he wanted and he said "I...want...test car...Test Track pweeze!" :-)
YAY! Oh, and w/ the exception of the Aerosmith coaster Vinny is finally big enough to ride everything else... He wasn't too keen on Expedition Everest, too much stimuli, but it was also day one, if we'd tried again after he got the earmuffs it might've been different. He loved Pirates of the Carribean, Splash and Big Thunder and 'Soarin...he LOVED the Winnie the Pooh ride and Peter Pan, but his definite favorite ride was Test Track...he even lifted his hands up on the ride screaming "Weeeeeeeee!" :-)

Glad you guys had such a good time!!!! AND for the breakthrough! It's those little things that can surely make life so much better isn't it? :thumbsup2

good deal, sara! so glad vinny had a great time. i remember when my DS5 with HFA sat through fireworks for the first time! those earmuffs work great, don't they! what seems like a small thing for a typical kid, sure can seem like a miracle when you "never thought" they'd be able to handle something!

i'm so excited and glad for you! i bet you'll see more of that adventurous spirit at home now, too!

LOL! Vinny's always been adventurous, but now he can do it hands free!
We were afraid that he'd want the earmuffs all the time but he seems to indicate when he feels he needs them...that's another major thing for me that gets me all happy.
