My DSis had to have her appendix removed this morning. She was away on a ski trip. DBIL took her to the ER Saturday evening with the classic symptoms.

Apparently it had already burst, or was about to. :worried: They were at a pretty small hospital in far Western Maryland. Luckily a surgeon had been called in for a little boy with the same symptoms. When she saw my sister's CT scan she didn't even wait for the radiologist's report to come from the big city (Cumberland). She put Sis right in the OR ahead of the little boy.

She'll be in the hospital til Tuesday and off work all week. ;)

I'd be grateful if you could send good thought's Mary's way.

Thanks,

Update: Please pray for Mary. She was feeling rather good on Monday morning. But, now, Monday evening, she's not doing very well. She has spiked a fever (didn't have one previously) and some pain has returned to her abdomen.

My DBIL and nieces (15 & 12) are still with her, of course, but now she's scared. So am I. :worried:

She's in a little country hospital and, I hate to say it, I keep thinking about all the stats on post-op and in-hospital infections. Plus, she's 150 miles from home and the rest of the family. We all just want her well enough for discharge so she come home to see her doctor and finish recovery.

Thanks,

I know how scared she must be and the rest of the family, but it is not uncommon for an infection to set in after abdominal surgery. I had one and several people I know did. The treatment is antibiotics and careful monitoring. I personally don't believe the size of the hospital matters, she may even get better care where she is. Think good thoughts. :thumbsup2

Please tell your sister that if we could survive a stay in a Russian hospital (DS had a staph infection in his nose) she can survive an appendix removal in the MD boondocks. ;)

Seriously, they know what to do for her. Chances are she'll have better care there than in a bigger city. I know DS had better care in Moscow than DH had 2 months later back at home. DH's staph infection was in his side.

The size of the hospital doesn't matter. What matters is that she keeps after everyone to make sure she's getting the drugs she needs so she can get home. She has everyone she needs with her DH and children being there for her. Sure, she'd like you and the rest of the family to be there, too, but she'll need you more once she gets home and she can't do everything for herself that she's used to doing.

I hope she's home soon!

Hoping she is feeling much better soon. In this case, perhaps a smaller hospital will mean more individualized attention! And, usually, a younger doctor will know of an older, more experienced mentor they can call on for suggestions or help....! Please keep us posted as to how she is doing and I feel positive things will turn around soon! pixiedust:

Hope things improve for them!! What luck! :grouphug:

I said a prayer for your sister.

My DH had to have his appendix removed at the ER in Annapolis about 6 years ago. By the time, I forced him to go to the hospital, his appendix had ruptured and gangrenous. DH ended up having to stay in the hospital for three days instead of the usual 1 day (when the appendix isn't ruptured).

With DH, his stomach pain after surgery was from a combination of having his stomach muscles cut for the surgery and bloating/gas from the surgeon having to inflate the stomach cavity with gas in order to remove the appendix and clean out all of the infection. DH was in excruciating pain for the three days he was in the hospital and he stayed home for over a week before he was feeling well enough to go back to work.

I hope your sister is feeling better soon and has a swift recovery!

Good wishes and prayers are with your sister, Kelley. Hope she is well soon and home.

I hope she's feeling better soon! Please keep us updated. Where does she live?

I just said a prayer for her and her family. I hope she recovers soon.

Keeping your sister in my Prayer's and hoping she is feeling better soon!

Thanks for the prayers, everyone. I just spoke to her and she says she's feeling a little better. Fingers crossed she'll go home today with antibiotics.

She lives in Westminster. The hospital is near Wisp/Deep Creek Lake.

Glad she's feeling better. Can't say I'd want to be stuck out in the Deep Creek Lake area, but it's true that she may be getting good, personal care. Regardless, it would be hard to be away from home and the support network. Hopefully she'll get out soon. I can't imagine spending a few hours in the car, but I guess with drugs it won't be so bad. :)
