My somewhat vegetarian dd10 wants to try shrimp and crab on our upcoming Magic cruise. She likes very plain or sweet food. I remember seeing shrimp on Cabanas embarkment lunch. Is this what you would recommend trying? Is there crab anywhere? I am encouraging her adventurous spirit and want her to have the best chance of enjoying it.

@Carrie in AZ is right. Crab and shrimp both every lunch at Cabanas. I have a goal to eat 100 shrimp on every cruise.

There are also cold mussels available at Cabana. They sometimes run out of crab legs on certain voyages so enjoy them early in the cruise.

Will there be any "prep work" to do to eat these? If so, is there someone to show her what to do? I haven't touched seafood since I was 4. ... that was a really long time ago.

No real prep work! Just pop the tails off the shrimp and dip them in some cocktail sauce (if she wants to try the sauce). This is about the simplest way you can eat shrimp - simply steamed. The crab claws are pre-cracked so you can just snap the claw off the the meat should come out. I did have to wrestle with mine a bit though on our cruise to get the meat out. The shrimp were much easier to work with.

In my experience you'll need to use crackers to open the crab. Honestly the crab in the buffet is stone crab and only so so. I'd stick with shrimp lest she get turned off by mediocre crab.

I agree. The crab in Cabanas is usually just the stone crab claws, not snow crab legs. I've never been particularly impressed with the stone crab claws. It was my experience too that the crackers were needed to get the claws open. And I don't really care for the flavor of the stone crab. I much prefer snow crab and king crab.

I had quite the ordeal trying to eat the stone crab claws. You definitely need to get crackers to open them up. They're also not on the tables with the other silverware so I had to ask for them. They probably have a bucket of them on the buffet though.

haha I love this! How do you keep track?

Prep work: Peel the shrimp. There is usually a thin layer around the shrimp that needs to be peeled off. This is easily peeled off w/ you fingers.
Crab claws need to be cracked. There are tools that look like odd looking pliers. Put the crab in theses and squeeze...several times in several places. Usually a lot of work for just a little bit of crab meat. Just don't be in a hurry. Let her have her fun w/ the crab legs.

I'm sure there is a CM that would be more than happy to show how to do it all. You just have to ask them.

I've had crab and shrimp in many places, including on the ship. I always have some while there, but I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had. If it's just to try, let her do it (the crackers are in a cutlery container beside the crab legs), but remind her that there are better ones out there, if she thinks they are just meh.

And yes, the shrimp needs peeling, as well. Messy, but doable. After eating those, I usually make a pitstop at the handwashing station before going for another plate of anything.

I hope the OP doesn't mind tag-along questions. What about the MDRs? What kinds of seafood are available? I would imagine some kind of fish would be, but what else? What about lobster or king crab legs?

When I was in college and I first started eating seafood (after being a vegetarian throughout high school), I was more into having seafood in dishes with other food that I already liked. Things like shrimp scampi or fettuccine with some crab in it. I think there are some choices like that at some of the MDRs. She can always try a dish at dinner and get a second entree in case she doesn't like it. There are a lot of fish dishes available with mild white fish which are a good starting point as well.

One of the main dining room dinners has a shrimp and either lobster or crab appetizer that's good too. You'll get it one night, don't remember which.
