Good Rates at Alamo for This Summer May Be Gone?

Looks like my procrastination has come back to bite me once again.

For the past several weeks I have been pricing a minivan rental at Alamo. I had what I thought was a really good rate - something like $194 for the week and $30 something for an extra day. An additional driver was free. But I kept dragging my feet - just was uncertain about the size of a Chevy or Pontiac minivan compared to what we have had in the past.

Well, I went to go check the prices again today and I can't get a price under $317 plus tax and surcharges. I have tried all of the codes that are posted at Mousesavers. I tried through the Sam's Club site too. No luck.

So I quickly went to Dollar and booked a minivan for $269 for the week and a day.

And I will keep watching to see if prices come down.

Hope that no one else got "caught" like I did.

fyi, we have the $177.09 wk, $34.84 day alamo minivan booked (CostCo with coupon/free 2nd driver), & i just checked ~ it's still working with our dates (last week of august).

1- ppl cancel
or
2 - they allocate more minivans to the codes you're trying
or
3 - another code comes out that has more minivans allocated

we've had that same thing happen in the past, but have always gotten the lower price eventually. (hopefully, your trip isn't too soon, so you have more time to "play the code game" ).

WAIT!!! I AM a Costco Member!!! I forgot because I never use it! (we don't have one near us) My card expires some time this month though. Wonder if I need the Costco card to get the rate.

I have until August so I have several months to "play."

I hope that I will find a lower rate again.

Dont' forget to try combining codes and to check back often. For example the codes from Family Fun mag plus the DC coupon worked better than the codes from DC with the DC coupon. I was able to change my ressie about two weeks before, so be persistent. If alamo isn't working for you try National. They may get cancellations as the dates near, so just keep checking back. I know it doesn't help you now....but in the future go ahead and make the reservation when you get what you think to be a good rate. With cars it's easy to cancel and rebook when you find a better deal - (Okay rebook and then cancel so you KNOW you have the good deal). There aren't penalties unless it's within like 24 - 48 hours and then only some agencies with some car classes. Good luck getting the better rate. I too am trying to find a great minivan rate and not having any luck at all.
