We are headed back to Aulani in the fall. Will probably stay a few days on Kauai as well.
Have stayed a few places there in the past. What are your favorite hotels on Kauai?

You can't go wrong with a hotel on the south side of the island, Poipu. It rains a lot on the north shore why it is so green and lush. The Hyatt is gorgeous and The Westin Princeville is also gorgeous.

Waipouli Beach Resort. Nice rooms, beautiful swimming area with pool, lazy river, and ocean view (not all rooms will have this though). 11 minutes drive north of airport.

We stayed here back in 2010 and loved it.

We're staying at the Westin Princeville in November, which will be a new resort for us.

Our favorite resort is the Hanalei Bay Resort on the North shore. The views are amazing, they have a golf cart that will take you to the beach if you don't want to walk down to the beach or back up to the resort, and a great pool. Every one of our family and friends we've recommended Hanalei Bay Resort to has also loved it. We're staying at the Westin instead of HBR because we are Marriott VC members so we're staying on points.

The North Shore is absolutely stunning. I highly suggest taking a Na Pali Coast tour while there.

If you want a central location, Marriott's Beach Club on Kalapaki Beach is also a great choice. Marriott still owns the vacation club portion of the resort, but the hotel portion is now the Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort. The pool is huge. The Kalapaki Beach, as well as Hanalei Bar, are both great beaches for families. The water is calm, and the beaches are very large and not as crowded as the Poipu area.

ymmv, we rent a condo through VRBO at Kiahuna Plantation. much cheaper than other options nearby but not all units have AC. pool is across the road up the hill, but beach is great. Definitely an older resort but mostly rebuilt after Iniki and many units are modernized.

Main Selling point is good beach right in front of resort, not as much walk as Koloa Landing or other nearby condos which are newer.

Poipu beach rated as a top 10 beach.
