GOOD MORNING disABILITIES BOARD FAMILY

I totally agree with you Mickeymom. My DH is disabled and this show has done more for him and his rehab then anything else. He is currently working on projects to help others in our community. The more we can help one another in this life the richer our own lives are. Ty and ABC you are the best. Please keep up your great works. :grouphug:

I feel the need to share this story. I have a friend who is a Viet Nam veteran. My huband is also a Viet Nam veteran as well as retired military. Together we were watching one of the shows last year about two young men who had just returned from their tour in Iraq. Their plans were to move into one of their mothers basements upon their return. The mom had done major amounts of work to make the basement comfortable and clean. However, there was a flood and the basment was distroyed. Ty and ABC selected the two servicemen for their extreme makeover.

The basement was restored (helping the mom), and the two servicemen were given a condo with furnishings and each received a car. (helping two of our servicemen who had been serviceing our country.) Now, here is my point: My husband thought the show was fantastic, he was so very happy for these two men and their mom. Our friend, well his take on it was rage and upset, as no one gave him a d.... thing when he returned from Viet Nam. It is sad to see him have the attitude that it wasn't given to him, so this was wrong. He now refuses to watch the show. :confused3 :sad2: Two completly different prospectives!

The truth is that this show isn't truly about helping families, it is about getting good ratings and thus making money from advertising dollars. This is just business, and whether it's right or wrong is a moot point. No TV show exists without advertising dollars, and advertising dollars are not spent if there will be no "return" on that investment. ---Kathy

You are absolutely right. Without good ratings, the show would have no advertising dollars, and it could not exist. Therefore, what they do has to be EXTREME, otherwise the ratings would not be there, and the show would be cancelled. And what a tragedy that would be! If the show was cancelled, they could not help anymore families! Do these people "need" all of these things? NO. Do they deserve them? ABSOLUTELY! I am humbled everytime I watch the show. It is amazing to me what many of these people live with/through, and still have positive attitudes!

I for one have never watched a show without crying, and I hope it stays around for a VERY LONG TIME!

Thank you ABC, and thank you TY, and everyone else that makes the show happen!

Hi Ty!!! (and friends!)
I LOVE your show-not only because it helps people in need, but because it is my wake up call every week-to open my eyes, look around and be aware of those around me who might like/need a little help. No matter how good or bad my week is-and with a developmentally delayed 8 year old who struggles every day, some weeks are really hard-I am reminded that I still have something to give or share. And I do it-because it is the right thing to do.And I always feel really good about it.So Ty and friends-what ever your plan is-count me in. It's all about helping and making the world a better place. Thanks for coming here and inspiring us and reminding us of how lucky we really are. :grouphug:

I have to admit I love the show too. But I'm the kind of gal who cries at the silly credit card commercials...y'know... Priceless and all? Well, I'm a sucker for a good cry and Extreme Makeover sure provides that. Yeah, sure, there's the ratings and business. And yeah, sure the money spent on some of this stuff could go to help others. But a lot of these families need help, and why not give them the best? It does make for good tv?
A long time ago I watched an episode where they built a therapy/play room for an ASD kid, it made me aware of a place where I could find similar products. I might not have known about that if not for the show.
I really loved one they did awhile ago where both Mom and Dad were deaf and they had two boys, one was an NT teen boy and a younger son, autistic and blind! They gave them a home that would make life a lot easier for the Mom and Dad when their older son leaves home, which he deserves to do when hes ready!
Sometimes I find the show is over the top, but...I love seeing the gadgets and the smiles on the peoples faces. Like when they gave a new home to a Native American mother of two who had died in Iraq while serving in the Armed Forces. They also gave them a community center.
I think ABC and Ty and the "family" do what they can...
and yeah, I'll admit it...I get an awful case of house envy when i watch the show...

Sara

Hi everyone!

Boy, I've been busy following our celebs from board to board as they talk about the DIS secret project, and are my little wings tired!

Some hints about the project have been given, and Tim Gunn says that SOME of the guesses that have been going on the CB (and maybe another board?) are awfully close!

I can tell you this much. It's going to be challenging and we hope fun to participate in, and fun to watch! Thanks to our DIS "celebs" for helping to spread the word.

Have a great day!

And, I want to add a big
THANK YOU
to posters who have different opinions, but are respectfully discussing.

I am the one with a different opinion but of course I respect everyone else's point of view. Having a dear friend who is very wealthy and a philanthropist for extreme poverty areas in Africa it's very hard for me to understand how people who live in the US could feel that anyone *deserves* a multimillion-dollar home renovation. I do feel people deserve decent affordable housing and that many people who live here and elsewhere certainly aren't getting what they deserve. I have turned down financial assistance from this friend for a new van which she could easily have purchased for me and asked that those funds go instead to an area/person/group more needy. In turn my children have gotten a good example, from me, of a severely disabled person working hard and trying to manage what resources we have. I cannot deny that it's nice to see someone getting a better life,...it's just the degree of "better" and what that means to us ( bigger TV, fancy electronics, etc) vs. better meaning you have enough to eat and more than one shirt to wear. I also understand fully that this show exists to make money off advertising and people probably wouldn't watch it if it weren't EXTREME. Still, I like to focus on the families' stories and a show that featured spreading that money around and telling those compelling stories would have much more appeal for me than seeing excess. Just my opinion, and again everyone is entitled to theirs. Our point of view is greatly affected by our own life experiences and our values and there are no points-of-view that are wrong, just different "windows" to look out of. ---Kathy

TY, I am a huge Disney fan (that's why I'm on these boards :thumbsup2 ), who had an uncle who was a quadraplegic for 53 year from a Korean War injury (he died less than a year ago at age 72).

Anyhoo, I used to wonder why he never had a cool van, never had a motorized wheel chair, never had the internet in his house. As a nurse I knew there were lots of new inventions made to help him live his life easier, but he was an older man who was happy with his life the way it was. And that's fine. But after seeing your shows, I know that receiving a gift is very magical, and even if some gifts are not "needed", they are definitely appreciated!! The idea is to improve someone's life, not bring everybody around the world to the same level. The show helps families one family at a time. No, my uncle didn't need the internet (although I think if it had been around when he was in his 30's he would have gotten hooked!), but if someone had wanted to renovate his home with a wireless network, he would not have refused, and his world would have opened up and improved just a bit more.

The show chooses to help people in one way, and there are other ways to help people all over. I love what the show does, helps families in need, one family at a time. Everyone has a different criteria for "in need", but it is the show's right to use their own definition when choosing families and how they are to help them.

So Ty, keep doing what you're doing! We love it! And I can't wait to see this surprise!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Oh, about the wheelchairs, DD used a wheelchair during our last trip while in between chemotherapy treatments. Because it was used for when she became tired, by the time she needed it she was too tired to get on a ride, but the lines did seem to be the same length in Early June (and we all know seasons can affect the lines!) During her previous MAW trip, she was too energetic to need the wheelchair, but we did get to the front of the line even if we didn't ask. Again, in early December the lines weren't a big problem. And now we're off to our celebratory "Emily finished chemo" cruise in a few weeks and she'll out run us all!

Hey Ty love the show not so much for the stuff people get but the way cool ideas you give me for my house. some of the things I've seen on your show I've gotten for my ASD dd(7) and they've helped her. Just wondering if any of your celeb friends that are showing up on other boards will be dropping in here? or if there will be a place you post just the clues because holy cow I came home and there were like 1200 post to the thread on the CB by the time I got off work...don't know if you'll read this but here's hopin...keep up the good work :thumbsup2 and can't wait to see what's up :cool1:

OK folks.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, it is time to let you know that almost all of the celebrities who have been posting are not the actual people. I had warned the people running the contest that many people on this Forum had been taking Ty's existence here on the board very seriously and had asked "Ty" to do something so that people here would not think he was real. That was when The Tag Fairy showed up with her comments.

I'm sorry that I could not let you know earlier that this was all part of a game, and we all hope that nobody is hurt by finding that it was a Dis Moderator (not Sue or me) who was doing the postings.
