This question was inspired by a facebook group I belong to. They are obsessed with house hippos. I know the house hippo idea came from an old commercial about being careful about what you believe in media, but people seem to have adopted the house hippo as a good luck charm to keep in the home.
I remember on of my grandmothers had a kitchen witch and kept a horseshoe nailed to the front porch. I don't know if she put any faith in the items or if it was just a fun tradition for her. I think the only item I have is a rooster pitcher my aunt gave me that she picked up in her travels. I don't specifically keep it for "luck," but it's a fun story/tradition:
The origin of the "Rooster Pitcher" dates back to the early Renaissance period in the Republic of Florence in Italy. During this time, one of the most powerful and leading landowning families, the Medici’s, held a feast in the nearby village of Gallina for their peasants. Later that night after the feast while everyone was asleep, a rival family sent assassins to assassinate a leading member of the Medici family to gain power. The assassination attempt failed when the roosters in the yards in and around the village started cackling, which in turn awoke the leading member of the Medici family and their guards. The assassins were caught and executed. In honor of the roosters, artisans were commissioned by the Medici family to create ceramic replicas of the roosters to be used as wine pitchers. These "Rooster Pitchers" had various artwork and designs painted on them. The "Rooster Pitchers" were then given to the peasants and friends for good luck against danger.
Do you have any good luck charms in your home?
