I'm another fan of Phillipa Gregory and Alison Weir....so I'm going to go look up some of the authors that have been mentioned - I need some books for our 8 hour flight to Ecuador/Galapagos in 6 weeks!
I LOVE historical romance books that are in a series...
my favorite authors are
Leigh Greenwood and his 7 brides series

I was her secretary for about 15 years! I typed many of those manuscripts and have the carpal tunnel to prove it.
Hi Guys~ I'm looking for a good historical romance to read. I have a stressful job and life so I love to relax with a nice romance. I read all of Mary Balough's books and enjoyed them. Also Stephanie Laurens. Any suggestions. I'm also interested in Victoria & Albert after seeing Young Victoria. TIA

Please look up Sharon Penman. She is a fantastic writer who thoroughly researches her subjects. She also has her own website so you can keep track of her work. She is currently writing about Richard the Lionheart.
In my opinion, she is far better than some of the other authors mentioned.
Georgette Heyer.
Just the best. Delightful romances, amazing humor and accurate history. My personal favorite is probably the Talisman Ring. A touch of mystery there too.
I highly recommend Georgette Heyer. She started the whole Regency romance genre. She started writing in the 30's until she died in the mid 70's. She wrote over 50 books, most regency romances, and a few other historical romances and mystery novels. The language she uses is very similar to Jane Austen, and she is reknowed for her historical accuracy. My favourite is "An Infamous Army" which is centered around the Battle of Waterloo.
Amanda Quick's are pretty much the only historicals I read anymore. She has some newer ones that tie in with her other pen name Jane Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle, but her early ones are being reprinted and they are pretty good.
Cathrine Coulter does a whole series The Sherbrooke Family ones, I think one of them was The Sherbrooke Bride. I used to read them and JoAnna Lindsey and Kathleen Woodwies, Phylis Whitney, Barbera Michaels, and other 'gothic' mysteries that were period pieces.
Let's see, here is my short list, and I am sure I could think of several others as well: Julia Quinn, especially her "Bridgerton" series (too funny!); Gaelen Foley; Loretta Chase, in particular, "Lord of Scoundrels" (possibly the best romantic history I have ever read); Karyn Monk; Jane Feather; and Sue-Ellen Welfonder.
