DH and I are headed to HHI in a couple weeks, and after watching Travel Channel last night, we have a craving for GOOD old-fashioned southern fried chicken. Suggestions on where to go for best?

Not sure if Southern fried is any different from other fried chicken, but I'm a huge fan of even the Publix friend chicken. It's better than stuff I've had in restaurants. Just my opinion!

And, the fried chicken at Harris Teeter's grocery down near the entrance to Sea Pines and at the Fresh Market south of the resort on William Hilton Parkway is very good.

It has been a couple of years, but I had very good bone-in fried chicken at WL Whispering Canyon.

Fried chicken is fried chicken as far as I'm concerned. I've never thought of it as being a real delicacy to be sought out. It's something my mother used to cook because it was cheap. That was before we found out how bad fried foods can be for you.

My wife's Fried chicken is very nice...but I won't share. :)

Publix is probably the best you can get near the resort. I have never tried the Pig. Do they even sell FC?

Unfortunately, the closest Popeyes is in Savannah. They have the absolut best IMHO.

OK, friend, in looking at restaurants for our trip this next week, I noticed that Scott's Fish Market in Shelter Cove across the marina from the resort has a southern chicken dinner. I haven't eaten that there. But I do know that Scott's is a wonderful place to eat.

Thanks so much for the tip! I am so excited for our trip, I cannot contain myself. It's over a week away before we leave, but I have already 'checked out' from work and keep 'checking in' to everything we will be doing soon!

We always thought so too, until this past weekend. We had dinner at Scott's on Thursday night, after driving to HHI from Atlanta. We were extremely disappointed, both in the service (waiter was loud and bordered on obnoxious) and the food was not good. DH had a steak that (one of the evening's specials) that was of poor quality and I had crabcakes that had waaaaaay too much filler in them.

We may have just had an "off" night, but I think it will be a while before we go back. :sad2:

I brought home one of the restaurant guides. When/if I get a few minutes, I'll try to see if there is anyplace that looks good for fried chicken.

I took a few minutes with the restaurant guide this afternoon...

While I didn't closely examine every menu closely, I was only able to find two places that advertised actual "fried chicken". (Many have chicken fingers or chicken nuggets, but I'm guessing you want the real thing...)

Captain's Seafood (near Coligny Plaza) has a "Southern Fried Chicken Basket" on their lunch menu for $8.25; it's not shown for dinner, but that doesn't mean you can't ask. We had dinner at Captain's one night over the weekend and really enjoyed it.

The other place you might want to try is "Street Meet", which is in the Port Royal Plaza (near Sam's Club). They show "Buffalo Chicken", which is described as "fried chicken dinner topped with blue cheese and wing sauce" for $16.95. We've never tried this place, so I don't know much about it.

Sorry I don't have more places to share... Maybe you can ask at the resort when you get there?

Thanks, Disneyaholic, for taking the time to go through your menus. I'll be sure to take the names of these places and will report back when we return.

Well, the next time you're in the Charlotte area make sure you visit Price's Chicken Coop. Some food magazine just ranked it one of the top 3 fried chicken places in the US. I was skeptical, but we tried it for the first time last month, and it's DELICIOUS!!!!! Don't miss out on the experience, you may change your opinion re. fried chicken. :)

Well, DH and I returned this weekend from 4 days at HHI, and I got my southern fried chicken! We went to Savannah on Tuesday, and were lucky enough to get a ressie at The Lady & Sons (Paula Deen's and sons restaurant). The chicken was DELICIOUS, as were the mashed potatoes, the veggies, and the key lime pie for dessert!

Also tried the fried chicken dish at Scott's Fish Market (right across bridge from Disney resort), and did not care for that. Tasted kind of bland, and was very soggy - not a crispy fried chicken at all, which was all I wanted! And since the chicken was placed on top of the french fries, they ended up being soggy too! Would not recommend that dish! However, DH had a salmon special, and said it was wonderful, so I guess it's a hit or miss depending on what you have.
