Good foods post wisdom teeth extraction?

Thanks everyone! No, I'm definately NOT going to show him this! He's pretty tough, but I don't blame him for being a little scared. I have tomorrow off work, but then he and DH are on their own during the days R/F. I figure he'll sleep alot. Now, off to call the dr. to ask him to call the pain meds in NOW so I can pick them up before the surgery...

Thanks again everyone!
Terri

The one food that saved DS17 from starving to death was Chef Boyrdee micro raviolo! By day two he was so hungry that he told me to find something of substance for him to eat. This is what I came up with....no chewing needed...just swallow whole! Make sure you get the micro ones! DD is having hers out this summer and I already stocked up!

If it can be turned into a paste in a blender, you can eat it. No need to starve. My son ate everything we did.

Best of luck to you and your son tomorrow. Sounds like you and I will be in the same boat (DD12s surgery is tomorrow also--not wisdome teeth but supposedly gonna be as painful). I'll think of you while I am waiting on her:goodvibes

Try not to worry. I actually didn't feel much pain myself and was fine after a few days.

I forgot the Chef Boyrdee! I got a can of the little rings for post surgery. It was a favorite after extraction thing.

Another poster touched on this-get the meds ahead of time. Our surgeon wrote the scripts a few weeks before surgery. A special mouthwash for a few days ahead to use daily, a steroid for inflamation to start the night of the surgery, antibiotics to start that day, and pain killers as well, of course.

I am getting my 4 wisdom teeth out in 1.5 weeks. They are not impacted just that 2 of them have broken and I was told to get the other 2 out at the same time. I am 38 and I am terrified because I hear the older you are the worse the recovery is. How bad is it going to be at my age and what will the recovery be like?

Sorry to hijack OP - just came at the right time though :)

Good luck. My 9yo had 5 pulled 2 weeks ago. 2 front teeth and 3 extras teeth that were up in her gums that wouldnt come come down.( She had 5 front teeth instead of 2) She was so miserable and missed the week of school. She lived on scrambled eggs, egg salad, milk shakes, ice pops and soups. After a few days pasta was goo also.

Hadley, I'll send good vibes your way tomorrow, too, since we'll both be sitting around in waiting rooms and then playing nurse to our children! It sure is nerve wracking!

Adding Chef Boyardee to my list....

First things first:  for your son and for you!

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out when I was 22 and while it wasn't exactly a horror story, it was no picnic either. I have some jaw issues and so was in even worse shape than normal afterwards in terms of getting my mouth open and getting food in there. But, I rebounded pretty quick. He's younger so he'll likely do even better as long as he follows all the doctor's orders. Everyone has a different experience (like childbirth, or so I've been told) so it might be easy-peasy for him.

I wish you both the best.

Now, in terms of advice other posters gave:

One thing to keep in mind if your son doesn't want to eat is that it will be important to have food in his stomach if he is taking pain medications.

SO. VERY. IMPORTANT.

I couldn't eat anything. In fact I could open my mouth just enough to get the pills in, so all that was in my belly was water, despite the doc saying even milk or juice would be a better choice. I was just so uncomfortable that I wanted to take the meds and go to bed.

Bad. Idea.

I ended up throwing up and FORCING my mouth open when I did that. In retrospect, it would've been SO much smarter to just "suck it up" and have a little something with the meds.

You live and learn, LOL!

He'll be hungry but he won't want to eat..

This was also me. He might be begging for that Ensure in the end!

I was 22 and my mom was in her late 20's I believe and like I wrote above, everyone is different. My mom did fine. Two of my wisdom teeth came out easy, one other was shattered and came out in pieces and the third was impacted around a nerve so there was the possibility I'd have long-term damage. After all that though, I was generally (but not exceptionally)miserable for about 4 days and then perfectly fine. The hardest part for me was how tough the meds were on my belly. Other than that, with lots of naps, the pain was tolerable.

I know some people whom I work with who've been in their mid-30s and older and they'd have it done on Friday and been back to work perfectly fine on Monday. Others have been out for a week. I wouldn't worry too much about it because you're really not going to know until it's actually done. I would just follow some of the very sage advice given here about the food and the meds and plan on getting plenty of rest.

Best of luck to you too! :flower3:

I ate pain killers for a few days...

i did have a little soup. But basically I was living on Perks.

Id rather have my jaw broken time and time again then to ever need another wisdom tooth removed. ( i had the wisdom teeth out to have the jaw broken to fix me)

i was in bed with a HUGE swollen head for about a week. it was HORRIBLE i am sorry to say. But my Dentist said everyone reacts different to surgery. My brother, i warned him how bad it was and how much it sucked. He had his done and he was playing basketball with his friends later that night. Eating pizza the next day. Must be nice !!

I have a really tiny mouth and it was hard to get them out. He said that he "knicked a bone" (that's verbatim) and that translated into just about the worst pain. I spent the next two days sleeping for 3.5 hours, taking percocets and falling back to sleep 20-30 minutes later.

I didn't eat those days, lol.

But after that I bit off the ends of french fries and sucked those till I could swallow them. I ate eggs, applesauce, cottage cheese and overcooked pasta (didn't chew it, really, just made it so overcooked that it slid down) - that sort of stuff.

It went by very quickly and all was back to normal.

If the guy says he knicked a bone and gives you a prescription for percocets, get it filled. Don't figure that it won't be that bad just because the mouth is still numb from the lidocaine or xylocaine or whatever they use. Fill the flippin prescription!! When that crap wears off, waiting for the pills SUCKS.

Good luck!

Aside from the usual... jello, ice cream, etc. the thing I remember most was my mom putting chicken in the food processor for me. I had been living on liquids for about 2 days, and having some real food was amazing. I recovered fairly quickly from the surgery, but I couldn't open my jaw very far. It pretty much locked shut. That was frustrating because I felt fine, but couldn't fit a utensil in my mouth to eat:lmao: So the liquid diet had to stick around for a little longer than planned.

Pastina is good. No chewing involved and you can boost it with some canned chicken broth, butter and parm cheese.

I had dry socket so I was in sad shape when mine came out. I could only eat if it stuck to the spoon as I had to flip the spoon upside down and scrape the food off and into my mouth using my bottom lip.

DS had his wisdom teeth out this a.m., and his greatest thrill was having them "preserve" the top two in a little tooth shaped plastic container as a "keepsake"! (What a weird kid!) He's alternating ibuprofin and percoset, and actually is NOT sleeping, and already wanting food! I'm sure the original numbing hasn't totally worn off yet, so that's probably why he feels so good;) The blood is grossing me out more than him, but I'm trying to keep a good game face on as I help him change the packing:eek:

Thanks for all the advice, and I hope it keeps on going this well!
Terri

With a decent oral surgeon it shouldn't be a big deal at all. I had one out (upper) at about 45. I took a businss trip across country the next day - no swelling.

About 2 years ago (age 60) I had to have two more out. One on top (easy) and one on bottom. The bottom one had 4 roots and each root had two barbs in it. It it to be chopped up a lot to come out. But again no real problems, no swelling or pain. I had a great oral surgeon.

You can always eat baby food if nothing else works.

When I had mine out, I lived on mashed potatoes (gravy helped to make them mushier), macaroni and cheese, and lukewarm pudding.
