I am buying a bed for 6 year old relative and don't know where to
start. I'd like to keep it $500 or less. Any suggestions for a good
twin bed source?

I would think you could probably get something new in that price range.

How about a Mattress Discounters, or sometimes even local furniture stores have some mattresses in their scratch & dent area (okay scratch & dent on a mattress sounds funny), but sometimes they have mismatched mattresses & Boxspring that you can buy brand new pretty cheap.

If you are wanting new then go to Sam's, Costco or Ikea. Otherwise check your local paper or Craigs List.

Thanks> those are wonderful suggestions. I am encouraged by the
options. Some of the catalogs suggested $900! for a twin bed. WHEW!

I would try Costco, BJ's or Sam's Club. You may want to check in your area because some times places sell mismatched mattresses and box springs for a good price.

Bed, mattress or both???
Check for a mattress at Sam's or Cosco, good prices. I would check Craigslist, newspaper ads or garage sales for the bed. I sold a $600 Broyhill that was like new for $100.00. It was the kind with the four drawers underneath.

We bought 3 new full sized mattress last year. After much research we bought themodern comfort spring mattress from ebay for $109 each, plus shipping of around $45. They come rolled up in a box and once you pierce they bag the mattress starts to inflate. It's a coiled spring mattress, but they somehow compress it down and get it into a box. Anyway, the kids loved watching it expand. And the mattresses are so comfortable! I can't wait to replace our mattress with one of these! But ours is in too good of shape to justify replacing it. I was skeptical about buying a mattress you can't "try out" so we only opened one in case we wanted to return it. They really are comfortable and you can't beat the price.

Our local Costco currently has their Sealy matresses in stock. The Sealy Posturepedic Plush is my favorite mattress.

Spend your money on getting a good quality mattress and box spring... probably about $400 for the Sealy at Costco. Then spend about $40 on a metal frame... Costco has the frames too. Let your relative pick out a theme comforter and/or sheet set.

It's much more important to have a good mattress than to have a fancy frame and a cheap mattress!

Do you have a value city furniture? I bought DS his loft/bunk bed there 1 1/2 yrs ago. I recently bought DD her new bedroom furniture at roomful express. DS's beds are hands down the most comfortable beds ever! They were VCF's lower end mattresses too.

We just bought twin beds for two of our kids. We got the mattresses at Sams. I wanted a captain's bed for my son because of the storage underneath and found great deals at bunkbedking dot com.(no, it's not only bunk beds) They have fantastic prices, everything is made of solid wood and the shipping is always free I think. We were very happy with that purchase, I highly recommend them for quality and price.
