I bit the bullet and bought DH the Pandigital eReader/Novel thing today. I waffled between it and the Kindle but decided that with the Pandigital running Android .... anyway, it just looked more his style. I would like to get him a case, though, so if anyone has one - what do you use? Or if you have bought/are buying one as a gift - are you giving a case for it or have you looked at them? I found a BodyGlove one at Amazon and the reviews were pretty good. I just wondered if there was a really good deal on a case or a really good case somewhere that people were using on this item.

I bought the Pandigital Novel at Kohl's a couple of weeks ago, and they had a fairly nice neoprene zippered case right beside it. It isn't "book style" though. You have to take the reader out of it when you want to use it.

Just my opinion...unless you got it for dirt cheap, you might want to rethink the purchase and buy a Kindle or Nook instead. I only paid $82 for mine, and I'm pretty disappointed in it. Kohl's supposedly has a good return policy, and I'm going to try to take it back.

Hmmm, really? Why are you disappointed? I bought the white version which I read online will run Android 2.0. That was the main reason I bought it, as I figured he can use it for a few other things besides "just" a reader. Well, that and it will do so many other formats *as well as* Kindle (using Android.)

I was disappointed for a few reasons. I also bought it because I knew it could be hacked to be an Android tablet. I updated the firmware, and then flashed the "Cruz" hack to the device. The main problem is poor battery life, especially if you're using the Wi-Fi to check email and surf the web. Even if you're just using it for an eReader, the battery life is only about 5-6 hours at best. The touch screen is not very responsive either, which is the main thing that bothers me. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the great touch screen on my Motorola Droid phone though. I also have a problem with Wi-Fi dropping at times.

I had these same problems before I did the hack. The Wi-Fi problem was much worse before the hack though...that seems to have improved it greatly.

All of that being said...I bought this device mainly because I wanted a "poor man's iPad". I finally decided to just go ahead and buy an iPad, after I came into some unexpected money. I'm not so sure that it's fair to compare something I paid $82 for to a much more expensive iPad.

It's important to note that without the hack, you can't use Kindle. If the gift recipient is the type that likes to play around with hacks, he may indeed love the device...as long as he isn't comparing it to an iPad like I did. ;)

For what it's worth, the hack is very simple. I am not a "techie" by any means, and it took me about 1 hours worth of reading before I was ready to do it. The hack itself took less than 5 minutes. Here is a good guide to getting started: http://www.slatedroid.com/wiki/index.php?title=Beginners_Guide

Okay, that is good information. Thanks! I did know that you had to hack it to use Kindle but I'm glad you provided the link for the hack. DH is a techie at work so I figure he will be comfortable doing it (me not so much LOL) I don't think he'll compare it to an iPad because he doesn't want to use an iPad as a reader (he does want one to install in his trucks dashboard, though :confused3)
