Good but cheap food in Hawaii

I second the shrimp trucks on the North Shore. They are typically a very good value and you get a ton of food. Also in the North Shore in Haleiwa (not sure if I spelled that right) is Matsumoto's where you can get shaved ice.

For breakfast, I would recommend Boot's and Kimo's in Kailua. It was recommended to us by a bellman and Aulani and they had amazing macadamia nut pancakes. Go early though if you can because there is typically a wait.

Just Tacos in Kapolei across from Aulani was reasonable (it's not just tacos) as well as Monkey Pod Kitchen. From what I remember, Monkey Pod has some great happy hour specials like half of pizzas and others things so you may want to check if they still offer that.

When we were there, my husband used the APP for Diners, Drive-In's and Dives. Found some local places at reasonable prices and the food was good.

I can put in a vote for the Rainbow Drive Inn (window service) in Honolulu as well as a trip to Leonard's bakery. They are close to Waikiki beach. Close to the airport is Big Kahuna's Pizza. A little further drive towards Aloha Stadium would be The Alley Restaurant at Aiea Bowl - awesome food in a bowling alley and full service! Family still talking about the Tasty Chicken. Heading north in Wahiawa is Maui Mike's chicken - probably the best chicken I've ever eaten at a restaurant in a very informal setting (order at window and wait to be called). If you can find a Teddy's Bigger Burger you won't regret that choice either! All are affordable and must-do food experiences.

I'd say my recommendation is Zippy's! They're open 24 hours and have literally everything on their menu. You can get anything from sushi to chili to breakfast foods! I've been in the Waikiki area twice and ate there both times. Absolutely loved it. Hope you have a lovely trip!
