I am looking for a good book for my dad for Christmas, he likes NON-FICTION only! He reads all kinds of books about sports, wars and history. If you have any good suggestions I would truly appreciate it!

He is sooooooo hard to buy for!

Thanks in advance!:thumbsup2

Can you give a few examples of some books he has enjoyed in the past? My husband and I read non-fiction but our tastes are totally different.

I'm sorry I don't really know any specific examples that he likes! :sad2:

I just know he only reads non-fiction. He likes sports and ones about history and war. He is a huge history buff.

I can usually tell if he has read it by the cover. :upsidedow

A gift card to Amazon or Barns and Noble, that way he can choose his own books. :)

Looking at amazon for what I've bought my dad and my uncle:

Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose
Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose
The Know-It-All : One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World

I know I've gotten them some of the story behind the photo books, like time life, etc.

One of my dad's favorites that he still tries to tell me about is night of the grizzlies.

There was another one that documented the life of someone working with sled dogs in Alaska that both my parents loved. Can't think of the name of it, if that's your dad's cup of tea, pm me and I'll call my parents and get the title.

DH's top picks from this year
He wasn't a reader. Then I bought him The River Of Doubt(historical about teddy roosevelt) And he loved it. The rest are others I bought that he loved!
He says his favorite is the Kit Carson one- Blood and Thunder

River Of Doubt
The Worst Hard Time(about the dust bowl)
The Invisible Wall( the memoir of a Jewish man told from his life as a young boy in England)
Blood and Thunder(kit Carson)

There's a great biography about John Adams, by......oops, i can't remember the author. but HBO did a mini series based on it.

Winter Dance is one sled dog book that was terrific!

Standing Next to History: An Agent's Life Inside the Secret Service was great.

I really liked Riding With Reagan: From the White House to the Ranch.

From Baghdad, With Love: A Marine, the War, and a Dog Named Lava was so good.

My husband likes the.........how can I say this? Boring history books. :lmao:

He is finishing up The Great Crash of 1929 right now and has enjoyed it.

He liked The Coming of the New Deal, 1933-1935

He loved Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times

I think a gift card is the best option. Can't go wrong there.

My dad is a history buff too. He liked the books by Tom Brokaw. He wrote several. Also, he liked the book Tim Russert wrote about his dad. My dad reads alot about Vietnam and the other wars too.

I like to walk around Borders and look at the books to find him interesting ones. Good luck:)

The Greatest Generation or The Greatest Generation Speaks
both by Tom Brokaw

1,000 Places to See Before You Die
by Patricia Schultz

1000 Events That Shaped the World
by National Geographic and Jared Diamond

100 Days in Photographs: Pivotal Events That Changed the World

by Nick Yapp, Douglas Brinkley, and Chris Johns

There are lots more on Amazon... and be sure to check the "Used and New" section off to the right... sometimes you can get a brand new copy for half price!

Are we sisters? :rotfl2:

I bought my dad a book about Benjamin Franklin from Costco. He loved it! :thumbsup2

They have lots of interesting non-fiction books like that there. Ahem. ;)

May sound like an odd question, but is he interested in reading about 9/11?

I have a HUGE collection and could reccomend many different kinds..

I tend to prefer non-fiction myself.. 9/11; Hurricane Katrina; hurricanes and tornadoes that have occured in the past; true crime; anything about "The" Kennedy's; etc..

Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose
Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose
The Know-It-All : One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World

Undaunted Courage is SUCH a good book. Absolutely riveting.

I'd also recommend Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10

Here some non-fiction sports books
Quiet Strength by Tony Dungy
Running for My Life-Warrick Dunn
The Glory Game-Frank Gifford and Peter Richmond

Well, if he likes war stories he's probably already read it but The Killer Angels is one of my favorite books of all time. There's some fiction in it with the conversations between the generals and the like, but it's required reading at West Point. The sequels/prequels Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure are pretty good too, though not even close to the original

I am an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction.

Several years ago, DW got me Band of Brothers. One of those books you cannot put down.

I also just finished John Adams, it is long but is really well written.

If he is like me, the best present is either a book I havn't read..OR a B&N gift card!

I just finished Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. It was very interesting and explains the underlying reasons that make certain people extremely successful while others aren't. Okay, that sounds dry as dust but check out the reviews on Amazon--the reasons some people are successful are really surprising and it's a great book.

American Lion by John Meacham

This book about Andrew Jackson's presidency is getting good reviews. It's also available at Costco if you have one close by.

]Winter Dance is one sled dog book that was terrific! [/B]

Winter Dance is by Gary Paulson and possibly one of the best books of all time!!! I am not particularly a dog, sport, Iditarod lover, but this book is one I pick up again and again! In fact, I think I need to bring it along on our trip because I can always read it again! Seriously, I highly recommend this book and if you ever get a chance to meet Gary Paulson in person, do it. The man has lived a thousand lives in the few short years he has been on earth!
