Goo-gone left my rug buckled!

I teach pre-k, and used making tape to mark places for the kids to sit on my beautiful oval-shaped ABC carpet. When I removed the tape, there was residue left behind, and a colleague gave me a bottle of Goo-gone to use. It worked beautifully! But now, the areas where I applied the Goo-gone are buckled!

Suggestions? Did I just ruin this $400 carpet!??!

oh boy. You might have de-goo'd whatever goo held the carpet together. Is the back of the carpet funny looking?

No - it looks fine. A little discolored from the oily goo-gone, but other than that, it's intact.

i'm no carpet expert here (but i did stay at a holiday inn)...

anyway, my guess is the goo did something to the carpet backing to cause it to buckle. if it were me, i would take the carpet outside, shampoo and rinse really well and lay it flat to dry. JMHO

I had this same problem! I spilled red nail polish on my carpet, and tried everything I had to remove it. Goo gone did the trick, except the next day there was a bubble in my carpet! After about a month of walking on it and sitting heavy things on the spot, it has finally flattened out like the rest of the carpet.

Yes, it did exactly what you suspected! If you go to the Goo Gone website there are specific instructions for using it on carpet and it says to not allow the solution to go down to the backing because it will affect the adhesive used on the carpet. They tell you to apply small amounts on a rag and then immediately wash with soap and water once the "stain" is removed. Just the fact that you have an oily mark on the backing says that it made its way down to the adhesive. I wish I could tell you how to correct it, but I think others have given some pretty good thoughts already. I just wanted to let people know that it can be used on carpets (I have!) but make sure to look at the full instructions on the website! Good luck!
