who has successfully spent time at the fort with no golf cart. Is it something I should really look into? We're bringing our bikes. Also... When do I find out our campsite number?

We have stayed many times without a golf cart or bicycles. It is doable by foot, bike & by bus. But, once you have a golf cart you're spoiled.

All the time with bikes and no golf cart. My own two feet work pretty well too. :goodvibes

Two different ways to get your campsite number (and they are similar).

1. If you do the early on-line check-in via MDE and use the "text me my site when it's ready" option, you will get your text when it's ready and you can by-pass the check-in building and drive right down to it.

2. If you don't do the early on-line check-in via MDE and stop at the check-in building (either the drive through lanes or the lobby) you will be given the site number when/if the site is ready for you.

Fort CM's do NOT give out the site number before it's ready. If you arrive early and it's not ready in option 2, you can do all the check-in EXCEPT get the number. The system will text it to you when it's ready.

Never have used a golf cart in the many years we've camped at FW. The internal buses work just great, or as bama_ed said above, our feet work just fine! In fact, we actually prefer to walk - makes it very pleasant to take in the ambiance of the campground, which is why we stay there - that, and location of course!! :)

Many also use bicycles, but we haven't brought ours as we like to keep them out of the elements, which is hard to do there. But, the decision to rent a cart is very personal, and looking around while passing through during the day, there are 'parking lots' full of carts sitting there!!

If you are taking your bicycles, doubt a cart would be used much as they're not a necessity (except maybe for physical limitations) but for your own personal choice and enjoyment!
Have a great trip!! :goodvibes

Had a golf cart once. One time we were there we didn't. Not necessary as long as you are relatively healthy and walk.

Haven't had bikes there at all (but I want to bring them next time).

In the past, if we were staying for 7 days, we would rent a cart for just 2 days. Planned those two days with no parks, just roaming around the Fort, looping at night, riding down to the beach for fireworks, Trails End dinner, to the pool in afternoon, trading posts, stables. Got a lot of use out of the cart for those few days. Present day we rent a cart for the entire stay, only because we are older and don't have the stamina of younger years. Also... as @2goofycampers said above.... we got spoiled.

We love using bikes at the Fort and have never missed having a cart. One nice thing about bikes is that your party can split up if they want to. Bikes are a pretty nimble way to get around! You may want to put a basket or crate on one or two of the bikes in your group or bring along a backpack to make it easier to carry towels, etc. You'll also want front and rear lights for each bike for after dark - we just use cheapie ones from Wally World.

We successfully camped for two weeks at the Fort without a golfcart. Our twins were five at the time and they didn't complain at all. With that said, we will be there for two weeks again this summer and we will be getting a golf cart. Although I do not see it as a necessity it should be fun!

I have been a few times over the years and have never had one. We don't plan to get one next time and don't know if we are bringing the bikes. Golf carts are expensive. And at this time, they don't hold our family.

We bus or walk just fine.

That's so great to hear. Thanks, everyone! I'm so excited for these newest Disney adventure.

The carts are great for moving young children and their stuff around. Sometimes, an extra 10 minute wait for the bus at the wrong time can add 20 minutes to the coming meltdown. We had three 4 year olds the last time we were there with family, and the cart was a real benefit for us.

If you're bringing bikes for transportation, you won't need a golf cart. We stayed with no car & no golf cart & were fine, but would have enjoyed the convenience. Bikes would have been ideal, but we flew in, so that wasn't an option.

Our first visit to The Fort we stayed in the cabins and rented a cart..we had so much fun zipping around in the cart, so when we came back and stayed in loop 700 and decided against a cart I thought it just wouldn't be the same but it was just fine. We had bikes which were fun too but we really didn't need them, we were in such a convenient spot.

We have stayed in the fort twice in the last two years and we did not have a golf cart or our bikes. We did just fine.

I think golf cart really depends on how you "do" Disney. For the adult trip it is worth it to us to have them, 6-8 people some of us coming back mid day to walk dogs, later nights....it just works.

For the trip with the kids we also plan to have one, but again its more about time savings then getting around. We could easily do the bus, but there are days in our schedule that I will need to go back and walk the pups, so having a quick way to do that without waiting for the internal buses will be a time savings.
