A big benefit of the off-site rentals is that they will guarantee a 6-person cart. Disney won't reserve one for you, it will be based on availability when you pick it up. We've picked up a couple of times (and gotten lucky with just a hand off a couple of times) but it takes about an hour and 15 minutes total.
