Golf cart questions...do I really need one?

We are staying in a cabin in May with our 3 children (8, 6, 4). I was hoping to not have to rent a golf cart. My husband likes to drive to the parks, he can't stand waiting for buses. I have requested a cabin in loop 2100 or 2200, hoping that we will be able to walk to the Meadows area. I also heard you could park there for 15 minutes, so I was thinking if we did take the kids swimming there, my DH could drive us and drop us off/pick us up.

Could someone tell me about the bus system? Can I take a bus directly from my cabin to the Pioneer Hall area?

I don't think we'll be doing alot around the campground, probably just a couple of swims, a campfire sing-a-long, and maybe a meal at Trail's End.

What do you think...will I be sorry I didn't rent a cart? I hate the thought of $50 a day extra. :earsgirl:

We always rent a golf cart. We find it is part of the fun to tool around the campground in them. I don't think Ft. Wilderness really wants you driving your own vehicle around the campground...that is why they have an extensive bus system, so I am not sure about driving the kids to the pool. You can take the internal bus to outpost, and the settlement (Trails End marina stop) etc. I could not imagine having to deal with my own car each day at the parks, but to each his own. We have never had a problem with the bus/boat system of getting to and from the parks.

I would consider renting one for a "down day" that you plan on spending at the campground. Makes a nice way to cruise around and see the sights.

Other than the MK, we always drive to the other parks. It's nice at the end of a long day to be able to ge tin your own vehicle without waiting and go directly back to the campsite./

If you check out my FW site (link below) I have a copy of the internal bus map down near the bottom of the page.

I stayed in the cabins twice last year with my 5 kids. We stayed in loop 2600 one time, and 2500 another time. We did not get a golf cart. We were trying to keep down costs. We really enjoyed walking around the campground. It is beautiful. One of my favorite memories is walking to the Meadows Trading Post every morning. It was just so nice to get out and see the beauty of the campground. I think the golf carts sound like a lot of fun, and maybe someday I'll rent one. And there are some instances where people really need them. But I don't think they are necessary. I "love" walking around the campground.

We NEVER rent a golf cart. I think the price is outrageous! We always have our bikes. But the bus route is great and will take you where you want to go. If you are planning to go to the parks, then i think it is a waste of money, alot of money, with 3 kids i'm sure the trip is expensive enough. Alot of people do rent them for the week, the campground is great to walk around. It is so peaceful and there are sidewalks.

Totally agree with FWCamper, the price for the golf carts is outrageous especially when I have 2 carts sitting at home. We bring our bikes for getting to the Marina but we drive to all the other parks 'cause I can't stand waiting around for the buses. It's really hard for us not to be able to bring our own golf cart but when you have a fifth wheel, it's not easy to do. I've seen some people towing another small trailer behind their fifth wheel but I'd hate to get stuck somewhere and not be able to back up.

Has anybody ever tried towing another vehicle/trailer behind their fifth wheel? :moped: :moped: :moped:
