Golf cart or bikes ?????

I know Golf carts are pricey at the Fort. We plan on bringing our bikes. What is the advantage to the golf carts as opposed to using bikes?

Folks who love golf carts will be able to tell you advantages -- like they're fun to drive and you can carry a drink at the same time! -- but I just wanted to say we love, love, love riding our bikes around the Fort. SO much fun. I don't think you'll regret it!

You must know that there are die hards to both sides of this issue. As far as which is better, it'a a decision totally up to you and your travelling party. No doubt, a GC is a fun way to explore the Fort. But it is an added expense. Is your party capable of riding bikes? If not, then a GC may become a "need". Just in case you don't know, there is an internal transportation sysytem that will get you around within the Fort if bikes and GCs are not an option. If you are planning on visiting more than once, you could ride your bikes this trip and get a GC next trip and then every trip thereafter, you'll know what works best for you.

We are planning for our 3rd trip to the Fort and will definitely bring our bikes. It is the perfect place to ride. Level, smooth roads and no traffic make for a great experience for the whole family. The ride over the Wilderness Lodge is great. You'll love it!

We will be bringing our bikes down so that settles that.

Don't laugh when you see an older woman on a 3 wheeler. Love the bike now I don't fall off.

Plus the exercise is good.

I won't laugh. I just switched from a rugged mountain bike, like in Florida I need a rugged mountain bike, to a comfort bike. I love it. Anyway there are places at the Fort that bikes can go, but GC can't. There is a great path between FW and WL that if you ride in the early a.m. or at dusk you will find lots of deer. We do it every trip.

We always bring our bikes. The Fort is a great place to ride. We have lights on our bikes so that we can see and be seen at night. That way we don't have to worry what time we come back from having fun.

Yep, you must have lights on the bikes to ride them at night. That is a Ft. Wilderness requirement. Helmets for the kids are required also.

We are bringing our "Bikes" - well trikes . . . I'm uncomfortable riding a 2 wheeeler because of a medical condtion so both my husband and I have workman tricycles. We love them - I think they are actually a better workout than regular bikes because they are HEAVY! My son rides a tag along behind my husband and my daughter rides her own two wheeler. Cant wait to get to the fort.

Bikes are great and I always recommend bringing them even if you are renting or bringing your own cart. But to answer your question about advantages of a cart, they are obviously faster and easier than a bike but the biggest advantage is you can still use them in reasonable comfort if the weather is wet or cold. I also was not comfortable letting our young daughter ride her bike at night. A lot of people do ride at night but there is a lot of traffic at night with people coming back from parks and going out and back from dinner. Things can get a little more reckless at night with people drinking and kids of all ages going a little wild.

Should you lock up your bike like at the pool or store?

We were at a campground and 4 bikes were stolen.

I can't wait till Oct 11th when we check in. Will be at Myrtle Beach the week before FW.

Really want to take that ride over to Wilderness Lodge. We have lights for the bikes front and back. Good buy at Walmart only $14.95. The back light has different settings, it will flash or just stay on.

We take both as well. Now that the bridge to the Meadows is closed to cart traffic and cart parking is limited at the pool bikes are a better choice. We like looping at night on the cart.

I use this for the front light. It also comes handy around the camper after dark outside and while walking the sidewalks and trails of FW after dark. Some of the loops and sidewalks are not lit very well.

The ones I use have a Spot light, Flood light and Strobe light. They are available at most sporting good stores and even Wal-mart sells them. the starting price is around $5.00

For the rear I use

If you get the LED style they seam to last forever (years) on the 1 set of batteries. The regular bulbs need batteries every day.

There are bike racks at the Fort. It's up to you whether you lock up or not. Short times away from your bike may be okay, but I would definitely lock up if you're going to the parks for hours. I have read on here that some people lock up, others don't.

I'm going to Wal-Mart this afternoon to get our bike lights.

We lock ours to the camper when away for the day. On the trip down to Florida I lock them to the hitch/carrier. At FW I lock them to the bike racks while we are at the parks or having dinner out if I am just running inside the trading post I don't usually lock it.

Better safe than sorry, if there is any question "LOCK IT UP"

I see you are from Tenn I am also from Eastern Tenn (AKA Western North Carolina)


My wife won't wear them. She wraps hers around the handle bars.

Since most of my hair is in the SHOWER DRAIN it doesn't bother me anymore.
