For anyone thats played a round of golf at WDW which course would be the best for a rookie golfer like myself? I'd really like to play one of the two PGA courses, but am worried they are too challenging for a hacker like me. Should I just stick with the 9 hole course or go for broke?

From what I've seen...

A lot of people who play the courses are, in want of a better world, rubbish at golf, so I don't think anyone's going to drag you off the course if you're not a PGA pro!

Watching people play past our balcony at Old Key West, I genuinely feared for my safety with some of the shots railing down/vaguely near the fairway after arriving home from the parks...

Go for it! You only live once!

That course near OKW, Lake Buena Vista is the one I'd recommend. DH plays golf every day while we're at WDW (he's of the "you mean there are theme parks here at this golf resort?" type). His favorite is Osprey Ridge, but I think that's a much more challenging course. Oak Trail is really not bad, except that it's purely a walking course. When DS played his first round of golf, at age 9, DH went to Oak Trail with him. DH is less than a 2 handicap, and thought he'd be bored on such an "easy" course. Well, both players loved it! It was challenging enough for DH, but easy enough for DS's first game. But for an 18 hole couse, you might try LBV.

Not to change the subject but has anyone ever seen an alligator while golfing? My wife is scared to death of them and I would like to try some of the courses.

Thanks

Never seen an alligator on a disney course but husband has seen many on other fl courses (we lived in Daytona Beach for 15 years). If he hit a ball too close to a gator he'd treat it as a hazard and keep playing. :)

My dad and bil are definitely not pros and they also like the Lake Beuna Vista course.

In 2001, I rode along with my husband while he golfed Osprey Ridge. I thought it was beautiful course.

Along the way, we same many lizards and birds. We lucked out to even see a 12" turtle crossing one of the cement cart paths.

I would tell your wife not to worry. Disney has many animal experts who watch over the property to prevent things like a gator attack.

However... I have seen a HUGE gator in the waterway in Magic Kingdom that the the large paddlewheel boat tours. (The waterway in Frontierland going to Tom Sawyer's Island.) I've seen a gator there on several trips, hiding out under the "deck walkway" that sort of cuts a corner going from the Frontierland candy store to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. He does move so I believe he is real. I had a coworker travel to WDW last month, and he mentioned the same thing. I guess he asked someone, and they said that everytime they go to remove the gator, they can't find him.

Hope that doesn't scare your wife - just trying to provide some info for you.

Enjoy your golf game down there. We are going in November, and I think my husband wants to play LBV (he's a pretty good golfer).

Lake Buena Vista is the best course for beginners/hackers. It's not too long, and not many hazards. Otherwise, try the walking course, Oak Trail.

Eagle Pines is the next easiest (I am an 18 handicap) if you want a more scenic course. My favorite is Osprey Ridge (it's beautiful) and Palm for a challenge and PGA experience. However, I've played the 99 holes many times and have seen all types of golfers - we golfer tend to think we are better than we really are and we have every excuse int he book for why the shots aren't up-to-par that day :-) So...don't worry, you will fit in on any of the courses.

Yes, there are alligators on the courses. I was playing the Palm, strolling along the water, when I noticed eyes watching me from the water! Following a loud scream (not the best thing to do on a golf course, but he scared me) I ran quickly back to the cart and drove off :-)

I don't play golf myself, but my husband loves it. He's no pro, but he's not awful, either. The only course he's played at WDW (so far) is the Magnolia, and he said he really enjoyed it. This is one that the PGA tour plays on, and has the Mickey sandtrap.

Oh, and he did see an alligator in one of the water traps. Needless to say, he let the alligator have the ball he shot into the water. lol

My husband is a good golfer has played the last two times down there ... he goes for twilight hours so get's the 1/2 price deal, but it is still expensive!

Anyway, he liked both Eagle Pines and Osprey Ridge.

He does remark that he finds some of the other golfers at WDW incredible. They have these very expensive sets of clubs, pay the extremely expensive rates, and just hack the place up!!!! Well, I guess what else are you going to spend your money on!!

I'd tell your DH to just pick the course he wants to play and don't worry about that he's not the best golfer. You'll see all kinds out there -- the requirement is the ability to PAY not the ability to PLAY.

Sorry - I lost track of who posted originally, Jason. YOU just pick the ones you want and have fun!
