Trying to persuade my hubby to do a few days at Vero but he is concerned that there is no golf there! What golf courses are there near by? How far is Vero from Sawgrass in Fort Lauderdale?!

Do any of the one bedroom units have sea views?

Deb:
There are MANY opportunities for golf in the area. I wouldn't necessarily put them on the level of Sawgrass, but it should provide the fix your husbands looking for.
This link should get you headed in the right direction....

And yes, some 1 bdrs have ocean views, though it's a bit of a crapshoot. Request the top floor and cross your fingers.

I always though most of the 1 brms had ocean views, it was the 2brms that were harder to come by. Anyway there is a ton of golf options in Vero. Indian Valley (I think) is a real nice course I played about five years ago. Nothing to worry about here.

Yes most of the 1 bedrooms are Ocean views because all of the 2 Bedroom lockoffs are toward the ocean facing side of the villas. The higher the floor the better or you might get a vegatation view :rotfl2:

I played golf at Sandridge it has 2 18 hole courses, not that bad, reasonablly priced, and only about a 10 min ride from the resort. They do have club rentals if needed but not shoes. I believe the fees for my son and I with club rentals and cart was a little less than $100.

Thanks for all your help about the local courses, that's brilliant. I've also requested a non-smoking 1 bed unit on the highest floor possible and hope for a view of the ocean!!!

My hubby still has his heart set on playing at Sawgrass while we're there.....does anyone know how long it would take to drive to Sawgrass in Fort Lauderdale from Vero Beach??

I did a mapquest search, and it's about 2 hours from Vero Beach to Ft. Lauderdale. We have done things in south Florida while staying at/near Vero, and that's about what we allow, 2-3 hours each way. In June, I went snorkeling in Biscayne National Park, it was a drive but worth it. I hope he can golf there if that's his desire.

I am not a golfer, but Sawgrass is obviously a well recognized course. Make this a part of your plans and hubby will be well rewarded. The rest is your's to enjoy.

There's really only one course to consider .. Indian River Club. We've played it a couple of times on different stays at VB and have played a couple of others, but none compare to Indian River. It is actaully a private club, but Disney can make arrangements for your husband to play there. Contact the front desk at VB and they will take care of the rest.

TPC at Sawgrass is about 3-3.5 hours north of VB resort, just south of Jacksonville and not too far from the Georgia border. A bit of a haul.

As for his concerns of no golf around Vero Beach, he is sadly (or rather gladly)mistaken! Although there are no Top-100 courses nearby (like Sawgrass or Doral), there are several quality courses within 1/2-hour of the resort, and they are a great value. IMHO, I think the golf around VB is superior to that in and around WDW, particular when cost is factored in.

Sandridge (2 courses) has already been mentioned, and I think they are as good of Florida-style course as you will find. Sandridge was designed by Ron Garl, a very well respected and prolific architect, particularly in Florida. Others around the area that I have played include The Habitat, Fairwinds, and Sebastian. I would rate these in that order. Despite all being municipal courses, they are quality layouts with generally good conditions. They can be busy in fall-winter-spring, particularly on weekends and weekday afternoons, but they are all reasonably priced around $50 or less.

Other courses around or just over 1/2 hour include The Links at Pointe West and The Majors (an Arnold Palmer course). While I haven't played them yet, I hear good things about them (particularly the Majors).

If willing to drive an hour, several more quality courses become available, including 3 top notch courses at The PGA Village in St. Lucie designed by Tom Fazio and Pete Dye, and Hammock Creek designed by Jack Nicklaus. Haven't played these yet (are on my list for next visit), but they are highly regarded and designed by big name architects. Other reportedly good public courses are also within 1-hour.

I also believe Disney can get you on Indian River Club, a top-notch private course in Vero Beach, but it's pricey over $100.

Here is a link to a website that discusses and reviews all the public course along the "Treasure Coast" (essentially includes everything 1-2 hrs north and south of VB.

With all due respect to dvcbrad, while Indian River Club is probably the most meticulously conditioned course in the area (it is a private course, after all), is designed by a great architect (the aforementioned Ron Garl who also did Sandridge), and I'm sure is a great layout (I admit I haven't played yet, it may in fact be the best), it is not the only course worth playing in the area. If your husband is a student of the game, he will appreciate many of the other courses I discussed above (particularly Sandridge), especially if he appreciates a good value. And the PGA village courses in St. Lucie (1 hr) are award winning top courses (particularly the South and Dye courses).

Being from England, I assume playing these Florida/American style course are a treat for him in the first place (as are your links course for me!).

DH said he really didn't like Indian River Club better than Pointe West. He would rate them about the same.

He said Quail something was nice-maybe Quaill Valley.

Sandridge is nice.

We live around the corner from the Sebastian course but it's nothing spectacular-just a nice local place to go to and get a decent golf game in.

Bump!!!! What restaurants would you all recommend in the area?

We've never eaten outside the resort, but we were there in August and noted that building 12 had quite a bit of tall vegetation removed by hurricanes and is the most likely to give you the ocean view you are looking for. I think building 14 has the most tall vegetation around it. Here is a map of the resort. Not real clear, but it will give you some idea of where things are.
