It's Friday, on Wednesday! Starting tomorrow morning bright and early at 7:15 I will be marshalling at the Shell Houston Open being held at Redstone Country Club. I will be there all four days of the tournament on the 15th hole. Thursday and Friday are early because the golfers will be starting from 1 and 10 but on Saturday and Sunday I don't have to be there until 10:30 because everyone starts on 1. If you happen to watch the tournament and they show any of the 15th hole look for me, I'm the big guy with the red shirt and the kakhi pants. Oh wait every volenteer at the tournament is wearing a red shirt and kakhi pants well okay, look for the goofy guy waving at the camera.

That is pretty cool!!

I have volunteered when the PGA has come to Southern Hills CC here in Tulsa in the past. I got to be a walking scorer at 2 PGA Championships and 1 US Open.

It is a fantastic experience. I've had the opportunity to meet many of the golfers. Most are great.....

Congratulations, what an honor! It sounds like great fun. How did you end up being a marshal? Did you have to take a test or something? Hey, maybe you could just some kind of a (small, tasteful) "DIS" pin on?
Hope the whole thing goes off without a hitch.

OT...we went to the PGA event at Avenel for a couple of years & I enjoyed it very much, but I am hesitant about ever going back to a PGA event because of the *awful* fan behavior the last time we attended. Ugh, some obnoxious drunks getting out and beating on some older couple's car in the parking lot...well, let's just say that was the last straw.

Sort of back on-topic...what does your tournament do to keep people's behavior in line?

I think when the tournament is over you'll need to post some kind of a trip report!

agnes!

The tournament offers each of the 18 holes to country clubs around Houston who man the hole as marshalls. Well I should say 17 holes as one is reserved for the host company. Since I work for the host company, we get the opportunity to volenteer. I chose to marshall because I love golf and wanted the opportunity to see the players. Whats even greater is that since it is a company sponsored event we get paid time off to volenteer. So I get a couple of extra vacation days this year. I have wanted to do this for years as I was a member of two country clubs at one time or another that marshalled but never did. This year I said what the heck and went for it. You have to buy your uniform for $75 which consists of a pair of Kakhi golf pants by Ashwoth and a SHO golf shirt by Ashworth along with a cap and name badge. I also get lunch and breakfast every day as well as two passes for the week to the tournament and two free rounds of golf at a very nice course in the area that is owned by the same mangement company that owns Redstone where the tournament is being played. This will be the first year on the new tournament course and it looks like a challenging layout. It measures over 7,400 yards for the pros and I will be on the 15th which is a par 5 608 yard hole. Security in Houston for the tournaments has always been good and in all the years I have gone as a spectator to the Houston Open I have never really seen any trouble.

Cool! I tried to talk Dh into volunteering at the PGA in Minnesota a couple years ago but he wouldn't bite. I am FOR SURE doing it the next time we get a big tournament in town.

Where do you live in Minnesota? I was lucky enough to get to go to the US Open when it was in Chaska at Hazeltine. It was the year Payne Stewart won in a Monday plyoff against Scott Simpson. That was back during my time working for the Evil Empire (Enron). We had a air conditioned corporate tent with food and drinks and the works. It was really cool. The funny thing is the thing I remember walking around the course and smelling chocolate everywhere. It was driving me nuts and had me craving a chocolate bar. I read the program guide for the tournament and finally figured out that all the planter beds around the course had cocoa bean husk mulch in them donated by Hershy's of Pennslvania. Why that sticks out in my memory, I have no idea.
