Golden Compass: an unexpected warning

Why would you be excited about a movie trailer if you didn't know what the books were about?

Considering that the movie is named after the American Version of the book, I don't think they were exactly trying to pull a sneaky end run around concerned parents. :confused3

Nicole Kidman is a practicing Catholic and she has been downplaying the "religious" aspects of this movie. Apparently there is nothing overtly anti religious in the movie, just a "stimulus" to buy the books and read further.

OK, how can someone kill what he doesn't believe exists?

So, you either believe in God or you don't. If you don't believe God exists, how can you kill Him?

I haven't read the book (yet) but I assume the god being killed probably symbolizes organized religion.

I love warnings like this! They always make me want to go out and read the book or see the movie. I had no interest in this series until all these frantic warnings started showing in my inbox.

The premise of the movie (and I'm assuming, the book) sound an awful lot like Alice in Wonderland.

I didn't know anything about this author or the story behind it. So the movie trailer looked very good to an avg. movie goer. I just posted the review of a movie that may or may not have sensitive material for children under 13. I also enjoy reading reviews and hearing any background stories about movies.

The movie trailer actually made me not want to see this movie. But thanks to all these "warnings" I plan to see it myself to see if it's appropriate for my DD8. Not because of the religion issue, as I'm Atheist, but she's sensitive to tense situations. Plus, that's what parents should do. See for yourself if something is appropriate for your child or get the opinion of someone you trust who has seen it, rather than take the word of people who haven't seen it.

This has been discussed ad nauseam already.
