Our next trip is late Dec/early Jan. I have a Gold AP that expires later this month; no sense renewing it, since it could not be used for more than half our next stay. Is it possible to renew my current pass and upgrade to a Platinum? Or would it be a straight "first purchase" of a Platinum, so no renewal savings? Non-AP ticket price with hopper is just under $600 for our vacation dates. I'm not sure if I'll go again in 2020, so buying a new Platinum at $749 probably does not represent savings in our situation.

Yes, you can upgrade (or downgrade, in a different potential case from yours) your pass to any level you wish when you renew :).

Great, thanks! I'll call later this week! Since the difference (straight ticket vs Platinum renewal) is less than $50, it's worth it to me to have potential future savings at a relatively small "now" cost.

If you think you might go again within a year of your December trip, it might make sense to get the Platinum in December at full price. You would have to run the numbers.

AP renewals starts the day after the old one expires, so you would be purchasing a new pass in December.
APs can be renewed up to 60 days before or until 30 days after expiration, and will still have the same expiration.

We originally had a gold AP, then upgraded to the Platinum Plus with the big sale last year. We went back to the Gold this year. Had to call member services to renew it at the Gold level. It just depends what you will use or not use.
