Going to try VB on a whim--what to expect

Well, my how things progress. Our first trip home this March was all planned, and we were going to spend the first 4 days on the gulf coast (as usual) and then the last 5 days at BCV. We purchased our points this summer, and banked them all, so I had a nice cache for next year. In the mail yesterday, we got the letter for our hotel in Anna Maria, and my wife decided she really didn't want to stay in this locale this year (too close to my mother's). So I suggested we look into VB as we had the extra points available. Sure enough, they had what I wanted, when I wanted, so now our first trip home will be to two DVC resorts! How cool is that? Anyway, I had done lots of research on the BCV's, our home, but not much on VB. What should I know in advance? The most limiting factor is my wife's disability, she had to use crutches to get to any water activity (swim, beach, etc.). As such, the closest we can get to the pool, the better. Any advice? I did specify that in my request. We've got an Inn room, Garden view at VB, and a 2BR at BCV.

My fear is that we will like this place enough to want to add on, so that we can do this every year.

Thanks in advance,

Boris

Boris,

There are very few buildings at VB any closer to the pool than the Inn - so you will be pretty close. Even if you requested a room on the side of the Inn "closest to the pool," you would still have to go down the elevator to the lobby and leave via the same exit as all the other rooms - so I don't think a specific room request is in order.

My family has spent a week at Anna Maria every summer since about 1983 - prior to that it was Indian Rocks Beach.

Be prepared for a "significant" reduction in beach area - especially since the restoration at Anna Maria a few years ago! Vero is just naturally much more narrow than what you've been accustomed to over here - but it's still lovely.

We were there (VB) about a month ago - and they had the ramp to the beach closed until some restoration could be done - so the only access was via stairs. Just wanted you to be prepared...

Florida's east and west coast beaches both have great things to offer. Their sunrises can definitely rival our sunsets!! :)

Have a great trip!

Just an additional note:
The ramp is still closed off due to damage, so unfortunatley, your wife will not be able to access the beach.

Thanks for your responses. I'm really looking forward to going to VB. As for access to the beach, my wife could really care less, she's more of a pool person--she'll be happy if I take the kids to the beach, and let her read by the pool. BTW, do you know if they have any sailboat rentals in the area?

Thanks,

Boris

It seems to me that if the ramp is still closed, per ADA guidelines, the Vero resort would be required to provide an alternative method of access to someone on crutches to the beach area. I've also seen a chair designed for use on the beach and in the ocean with large floating pontoon style wheels for someone with mobility limitations. My suggestion is to call ahead and make arrangements.

Thanks goofyshell! That was a helpful thread.

BTW, North of Duluth? What city?

Boris
