I've have the uncut version that was released a few years ago and can tell you that the visuals in this film are really something to see. I think you'll really enjoy it on the big screen.

Is that uncut version available for sale anywhere?
DS (17) is working his way to a Black Belt in Kung Fu, I think that would be a great X-Mas present for him if it's available!

The earlier DVD release is available still on some internet websites, which is where I ordered it a few months ago. I would just do a google search for it. It's in Chinese packaging but I believe it's region free and will play either with english subtitles or dubbing. The quality is pretty good as it was a Mirimax release - I think intended for Hong Kong. It was only like $10 too.
