Going to Hilton Head in afew weeks....

Hi - not sure if this is really the right board but we are going to Hilton Head in afew weeks and my kids are both sick right now.... hopefully they will be better for the trip. My question is - Is there a pharmacy or doctor that we can use while we are there?... Does anyone know how the insurance would work??? Just trying to get some information in case we need it...

My husband had to use one of the "doc in the box" places once when we were there. While he had to wait, the service provided was fine. If you need these services, you can ask the front desk where to go or who to call.

There is also a hospital on Hilton Head Island and you can always use the ER there if necessary. It's about 10 minutes from the resort.

There are a couple of first rate urgent care centers on the island if necessary. I also have the name of a good ped. there---haven't used him myself but close friends did and were very happy. If you want the name, let me know, I can look it up. Overall, the medical care on HH is wonderful---doctors (as do many others) want to live there. I know one cardiologist who lives on the island and commutes to Charleston twice a week. Anyway, hope your kiddos feel better and you have a great trip.

Dis-happy.... I feel better knowing that you know people who have used the doctor's there and that they felt comfortable with them. If you have the name of the doctor (pediatrician) that would be great but don't go crazy just for me!

Would either one of you know if medical insurance would be taken (under the circumstances) or if you would have to pay for it out of pocket?... Just curious...

I think it probably depends on your insurance. You might want to give them a call before you go. In DH's case, he had to pay for his treatment and then submit it to insurance later on.

As far as insurance goes, it will probably depend on what you have. I know BCBS is pretty easy to use in other states with a bit of research first (BTDT). Some doctors you may have to pay up front then get re-imbursed from your insurance company directly, according to your plan's limitations and deductibles. BTDT as well.

The safest thing to do is take them to the doctor before you leave if you are concerned that they have a lingering illness. Try for 48-72 hours ahead of time, so if they need antibiotics for an ear infection or whatever, it has time to work. You could also touch bases with your doctor this way, so if they get worse, you can call the office, tell them what's going on, and just have a prescription called in for you where you are (BTDT too!!!!). Sometimes mother's intuition makes the best diagnosis though....

When are you going? We'll be in HH May 26th, spending the night on our way to WDW. Can't wait!!!!

We used the Urgent care facility that HHI front desk recommended and were pleased with the doctor and staff. I called the number on the back of my insurance card before going and they said there would be no problem.

We did have a problem with the insurance company not covering the antibiotic at the pharmacy. It was a very expensive antibiotic, but our insurance isn't the greatest either.

Dis-happy --- We are actually going to still be there on the 26th!... We are going down May 22 and staying until the 27th. Maybe we can meet up. It might be hard with my hubby and parents but I can try. I had booked a 2 bedroom and figured I would take my parents... My mom said she couldn't come and made me cancel her airline tickets... then all of a sudden she was able to come!.... I wanted to kill them because the flights were double the price!.. I rebooked and plus paid a penalty.. I did it though because my mom really needs a vacation and I want them to come. I didn't tell her that she put a major dent in my finances!
