For our 14th wedding anniversary, we have not been there a long time, is there a good restaurant we should try? Anything neat to do there?
Just looking for opinions from those of you who have been there in the last little while. :thumbsup2

Just returned from Barrie! We spend this same weekend there every year!

Our girls play broomball and this is there provincial tournament weekend! So we spend the weekend driving from arena to arena and then hotel! We just got back from staying at the Holiday Inn off Essa Road. It was actually quite nice.

Not sure what to do in Barrie for a weekend though.

Enjoy yourselves though!

cool!
Do they have much snow up there? I am used to the little bit of snow that we have here in Hamilton.
I know that Barrie is in the snow belt though!

I am in Orillia, which is 20 minutes north of Barrie! They have as much snow as we do ... which is average I guess for this time of year. Maybe a little less than usual even, which is nice :)

There is a good Keg in Barrie. It is at the Dunlop Street exit on the southbound side of the 400. We do love the Keg in the middle of winter when a good steak is needed ;)

For breakfast, we like a diner called Wimpy's (but not the one on Dunlop St ... it isn't as good as the other one, which is close to Big Bay Point). They have a good bacon and eggs breakfast ... at least we like it (a lot!)! It is a pretty busy place, so it is popular with lots of people.

As for other things to do ... you'd need someone from BArrie to probably answer that! They do have a ski resort (Snow Valley) if you like skiing or tubing. There is a nice movie theatre in the south end too.

Have a nice weekend :sunny:

HI there..

I live in Barrie and we have lots of snow!!.. you can take some home with you when you leave if you would like! LOL... I agree the Keg is aways good.. but I am a favorite of Montana's.. its off of Molson park drive!.. As for hotels.. Holiday inn is nice, or if you find one your interested in just ask me and I can let you know if its nice or not!.... As for things to do.. skiing of course... downtown is nice, just to go for a walk (if its not to cool).... you could always go to the show.. things like that or get yourself a hotel with a hot tub.. and never see any part of Barrie, expect the hotel room!!.. Enjoy your anniv...

For our 10th this year we went to horseshoe resort and really enjoyed that.. its was nice and relaxing!

Good luck.. any more information need.. feel free to ask... Sarah

Thanks, I am staying at the Holiday inn express and yes I did get a hot tub room... lol.. They give breakfast so I don't need that but I am looking for lunch and dinner's I was thinking of trying the Crock and Block.. the menu looks good, is it an ok place?
I would love to ski but I think that my DH's back can't do it and my I have never been, we may grab a movie if something good is playing. OR do some shopping, not sure what else there is.. I heard that the Disney outlet in the mall is good.. is it?
Thanks for your help!

We love the crock and block here, but be prepared it has not been updated aesthetically in forever. You can always count on a good meal there and the Sunday brunch is really good! Jack Astors is within walking distance of your hotel, as is Boston Pizza. If you are adventurous there are 2 good Thai restaurants downtown. Caseys at the Molson's centre is also close to you. There are a few new restaurants at that end of town too - a steak market that sounds similar to a Ponderosa, I know one couple that went there and loved it. I have lived here my whole life so if you have any specific questions ask away!

As for the Disney outlet I think maybe you are referring to Vaughan Mills which is about a 45 minute drive south from your hotel. The main mall here is being renovated right now, and is not the best.

Oh yes - I have never done this but I think Boston Pizza offers a dinner and a movie combo - they are both very close to your hotel, you might want to check it out!

Hello, we are also from the Barrie area and might I suggest some of the following places:

There are actually a few really good places in the downtown core, that are not your typical chain type restaurants. There is a restaurant called Casa Mia, it is Greek/Italian and we love this one. Their Chicken Parm is to die for. Also beside Casa Mia is a place called the Town and Country, the food is excellent. Another place to try downtown is Manhattan's, it overlooks Kempenfelt Bay and is really nice. You might like Oscar's too, it is a martini bar and is kind of fun. Although I can't quite vouche for the food as I have never had it. If you like grilled food, you will really enjoy Weber's on the water front too.

Barrie has all of the normal big chain restaurants too, but those one's are some of our fav's.

WOW thanks for all the great advice, I will look up those places!

I hope you enjoy your weekend. You could always try snow tubing at Snow Valley it is alot easier on the body than skiing. We have a ton of new snow which should make it very nice. I believe they still have 2 for 1 coupons at the Tim Hortons. :thumbsup2

I'm going to have to go with blusk and recommend an non-chain type restaurant. I also love Town and Country Steakhouse. I believe they even have a web site to check out their menu and get driving directions. We also like the Crock N Block.

Ok my big question is why did you choose Barrie. I live there. It is a very nice place if you ski and very beautiful in the summer. But since you do not plan to ski why are you choosing to come here and not Toronto to say see a theatre Show?

Our reasoning is, it is some what remote, it is more up north than Toronto and we just wanted to get away for the weekend. We live near Toronto (Hamilton) and it is too busy for us, we just wanted some peace and quiet for the weekend to get away from all the rushing around and a weekend away from the kids.

Oh and another reason is my husband wants to check out that big fishing store off the 400 there.. lol

I would second the vote for Oscars, a little more pricey but request Pete for your waiter and it will be worth it! Also, Shirley's has great food - a little more moderate than Oscars. Haven't been to Town and Country in ages, I always forget about it - will have to go sometime soon.
