Going Remote

Our school will prob not ever go back fully remote thank goodness. But the option is there for parents who want it. My 5th grader brings his Ipad home daily and the 2nd grader does occasionally. Basically when he brings it home, I know the school is preparing for a snow day or something lol. Even if they did go remote, most of the kids from my kids classrooms would just be in daycare together anyway. Our school had one week that they went back to remote, the whole week of thanksgiving 2020 bc 1/2 the cafeteria staff was out, but thats it. They don't make anyone from a classroom quarantine other than the person who is actually sick.

Clearly you don’t understand how this is working. For many, it’s not a choice we have. The decision is made by somebody else. You also clearly don’t understand what the actual issue is. For 99% of schools it’s staffing, not any fear.

But please, by all means, get your emergency sub credential and come help out at the schools.
I work over 40 hours a week and never stopped going to work during all of this, as did most of my family. And we help with the care and e-learning of my nephew and some of my friend's kids. most kids are not getting any help at home and failing more than just school. Locking down doesn't work and All these businesses going under that means empty buildings which means your tax bases are going to go up. I have family members who are front line workers.

And yup I am proud that my kid goes to Purdue and we have Mitch Daniels who set the way for colleges to open.

It is a problem for sure! I researched the brand I posted awhile back and was able to find it listed on the FDA page still and multiple articles as the real deal. So far it’s worked well for me.

This Mask Nerd guy was saying that if you order from Amazon, etc, they could still be fakes even if they match what is on the FDA page. The guy never said, though, WHO I should order from if not Amazon.

At a higher level institution I would not enroll in a 4- year university that was switching my learning to be remote all the time. I do think it's fair to delay coming back to campus and I wholeheartedly agree on that front but I'm not paying tuition and course fees AND campus fees for a campus I'm not actually using. I would have paid for an online school if I had done that.

In my state and the state next to me enrollment is down but it's not necessarily because people prefer online vs not. I think people have given up on higher education because they weren't getting even a fraction what they were paying for.

Now lower education? People were flocking to private and online schools because they didn't like the rules of public schools with a side portion being their student learning better. But most was due to uncertainty in just what would be done and they wanted the control more.
That sorta was the mantra back when mandates were all the rage and people were rallying against keeping them in place after so long but right now since November it seems many places have been dealing with covid, flu, colds, other respiratory illnesses, strep (oddly I've know multiple people with this including my sister-in-law no covid but strep and a sinus infection), etc

I've watched my state go from almost the lowest level for flu cases to now being high almost at the vey high level. Part of that is going to be a mismatch in the flu vaccine with the dominant strain which does happen from time to time. It's probably at the worst time though given how the flu was non-existent last year.

It's just a lot ya know? It's taking out large swaths of people at once.

Less to do with stay home stuff, I think we've moved on from that train of thought these days.
oh my goodness. It doesn't happen often, but for once I think we agree on something! :rotfl2:
I'd have never been able to do college on line. Nor would I have paid that kind of $ to do that.

Just read that in Boston 155 teachers have tested positive in the last two days. Kids are just back today. Gonna be a fun Winter.

Politics will close this thread down.

Best we stick to how our school systems are being affected, and what changes they are making, if any, to their teaching processes during this time.

Well that could be true of ANY place you get them from because they’re all ordering from some place. I am ordering mine directly from the company via Amazon.

I can say I have used these inside a classroom, at Disney and around town safely for months now, so I’m confident that my research paid off.

You missed the entire point of what I was saying 🤦‍♀️

I totally agree. Education is essential, but this is a global health crisis. I guess what I really meant to say is that the CDC makes these “recommendations” which are supposed to be strictly based on science. In this instance it doesn’t seem to have to do much with the science. The science would seem to say that cruise ships follow much stricter protocols than schools in regards to sanitizing and cleaning and requiring all to be vaccinated. To me that sounds a lot safer than sending millions of children who cannot be vaccinated (younger kids) into close quarters for six hours a day.

As an example, my daughters school is requiring kids to eat lunch in their home rooms. That means 30 unvaccinated kids in one room with masks off for at least 30 minutes. In addition, some schools like my daughters room, have no windows for circulation, are in older buildings and cramped with too many people. Plus, they are required to keep their classroom doors closed. How is that safe and following the science? I guess I find the whole thing crazy particularly with cases running out of control.
Is this a Pre-K class? Because kids 5 and up can get vax, so at least some of those 30 should be. Hopefully. It doesn’t change the point you are trying to make - I’m just saying most school age children can now be fully vax.

To me, that makes it a question of who I trust. Do I have more confidence in some guy trying to be a YouTube "influencer" to make money...or Amazon trying to sell masks to make money?

YMMV, but I trust most established businesses over just about any YouTube "personality."

It's pretty well known that Amazon is full of fakes for just about anything. Plus, if you watched this guy, he's far from being an influencer or personality. He's an aerosol engineer who put his skills to use early in the pandemic during a lot of free time.

Now that's not to say that you can't get a legit product. There are many shops set up through Amazon and those are probably fine, but when you just see generic masks coming from China and touting that they are FDA compliant, etc., there's really no way to know and many have been proven to be fake. Also reading many reviews within the masks show that people are finding fakes.

I am typing this from my desk at school waiting to see how many kids return in person today. My classroom is an interior classroom with no windows and something that blows cold air all day long. Last year I made them clean the filter that I don't think had been cleaned in 5 years time. My building was opened in 1905 so there are so many quirks that it is just a breeding ground for mold, mildew and whatever is in the air. My high school students refuse to wear their masks correctly or show up with nothing. The Union wanted to go remote until Wednesday when supposedly the district is giving us all 1 KN 95 mask. I don't really know what I am supposed to do with 1 mask but whatever at this point. Stay safe everyone.

I taught in the twin of your classroom for over 30 years. No heat in the winter and only heat in the hot months. It was the #1 reason I retired. I could no longer take the 90-105 degrees of my classroom.

So where are you getting your masks from then?

There are ways to weed out the fakes from the legit ones on Amazon.

Not quite yet. FDA approved it today. CDC meets Wednesday. It’ll be soon enough, but just clarifying it.
To be fair I stated neither. Just said Pfizer is authorized for ages 12-15 ;) I once had a poster who when I dared to mention that Pfizer's age group was reduced responded "well it's going to take a week, two weeks or more for kids to get it"...pretty sure we all know the point is eligibility as it's already understood each area and hospital system and pharmacy will vary on when so and so could come in. Your point is taken, although I think we're beyond the point of needing to clarify this point once FDA has stepped in to give the okay, usually it's a formality at that point. In relation to the PP's comment about unvaccinated kids not only should most schools have at least some percentage but ages 16+ have the eligibility to get boosters and younger will too. It's hardly a case of 30+ unvaccinated kids running amok (unless they are under 5) unless somebody's area is in real trouble with their vaccination rates (in which case the argument has nothing to do with CDC/cruise stuff).

**Yes I get your point :)

Can be vaccinated, but most in her classes of 100 plus students aren’t. She teaches 6th grade math in a city school that includes K-12 with a large population of students who are under-privileged if that is the right word. Most of them are not vaccinated and it has been very difficult for school to convince them to do so.

Well, I got some from Amazon and some from Costco. If you know how to weed out the fakes on Amazon, please do tell.

The last KF94s I ordered were from here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092QNKF3...0_1_4&crid=10K9NYTXLQUMO&sprefix=mask

When I viewed the Mask Nerd tests, he has a spreadsheet of what he's tested and to the far left the direct websites to order from which ensure that you're getting the stuff straight from the manufacturer and not a fake that doesn't measure up to the claims the mask maker is claiming. He stresses not to go through Amazon/Etsy/Ebay because of the potential for fakes. He doesn't state that everything from there is fake, but you can can duped.
