Going, going, gone...Geraldo Rivera

It now looks as if the story is true. AFP and Reuters are reporting Pentagon information that Geraldo has been asked to leave the unit he has been travelling with. Here's the link: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...31/en_afp/iraq_war_us_television_030331174934

What may NOT be true is that he was escorted out of Iraq. Whle it appears that he no longer enjoys the "embedded" status, he may still be able to roam Iraq solo.

If this did happen, then I don't believe he intentionally meant to harm our troops. As other people have posted, he's very much a supporter of the military. My guess is that he just messed up.

Now the Rev. Jackson(what church is he a reverned of, anyhow???)
Why it's the First Church of Almighty Jesse Jackson, of course. Technically it's a cult, but he still enjoys tax-free status.

I was watching last night & he was drawing troop movements in the sand. I was wondering if that was a good idea & apparently it wasn't.

I doubt he intentionally did it, but it was obviously a serious lapse in judgment & I hope none of our troops' lives are in danger because of it.

I'm not sure what is going on anymore.
Although I do feel that Geraldo is...(how shall I put this)...a goober, I don't think he would ever intentionally hurt the US troops.

Thanks guys for the reminder of Geraldo's illustrious  talk show history. Maybe Jenny Jones can go take his place out on the front lines.

As if the war was not enough drama...we now need a soap opera. :o Did he or didn't he? Is he or isn't he?

Geraldo gets all caught up in these things and I swear at some point he believes he is "fighting" in the war. He was the same way running around in Afghanistan. I don't think he would have given the info on purpose but just got caught up in the moment.

Well if Jesse Jackson goes over there, they can keep him. He has been very outspoken against military action, so I don't think we ahould have to protect him.

I also don't feel we need those embedded reporters. I know they went through some training, but I really don't need to see the war that close up.

I have actually stopped watching a lot of the news channels...it was just getting to be too much for me.

Well may be he can do another special about finding and looking inside Al Capones secret vault

It was very confusing. CNN and MSNBC were reporting that Geraldo was a goner, and he was downright cranky when they asked him about it. It looks like it was true. No loss.

BTW, Geraldo went to the same college as my DH for awhile. Back then, he went by the name "Jerry Rivers." He transferred to another school. (I know, useless info :p )

Whether he did revealed info accidently or not does not matter. If he said more than he should have, accident or not, he should go. He is a supposed professional and one slip up from him could cause many on both sides their lives. OK, so I don't like the guy. I am one of those that remembers his trashy reporting and broken face deal.

Wow, I must be the only one that likes Geraldo's reports from Iraq. I think he's a great journalist in the field.

I think everyone condems the man for his past in journalism should look in the mirror and make sure they've never said/done anything in the past that they wouldn't do today.

nothing I have ever said has ever put anyone at risk. I also never reported trash as truth to 1000's of people...or had my faced bashed open because of his style of reporting. Hey my opinion....I am entitled to it as you are to yours... Just because I do not like his style now or in the past means nothing other than that and is no reflection on me.

What else should we judge him on? Yes I do think we should be judged on what we have said and done in the past and present. Especially when its broadcast to millions of viewers.

Well it's 6:15 am on April 1st and Geraldo is still in Iraq and still embedded. Fox claims nobody from the Pentagon has contacted them- Geraldo also says he got permission from the Unit Commander for his little impromptu geography lesson. What do you suppose the truth is??

Fox News, military reach deal on Rivera
Correspondent will leave Iraq rather than be expelled

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Fox News Channel executives and the Pentagon reached a deal Monday in which correspondent Geraldo Rivera, who raised the military's ire when he reported operational details, will leave Iraq voluntarily rather than be expelled, Pentagon officials told CNN.

After early reports indicated that Rivera would be expelled from the Army unit he was traveling with, Fox and the Pentagon agreed that he would leave on his own, without being officially sanctioned.

U.S. military officials told CNN on Monday morning that Rivera violated the cardinal rule of war reporting by giving away crucial details of military plans during a Fox News Channel broadcast from Iraq, where the reporter was temporarily assigned to the Army's 101st Airborne Division.

In the live broadcast, Rivera told his photographer to aim the camera at the sand in front of him. Rivera then outlined a map of Iraq, and showed the relative location of Baghdad and his location with the 101st Airborne. He then showed where the 101st would be going next.

Senior Pentagon officials also told CNN early Monday that the U.S. military had decided to expel Rivera.

"He gave away the big-picture stuff," a senior military official told CNN. "He went down in the sand and drew where the forces are going."

A Pentagon official told CNN that members of the 101st Airborne would escort Rivera to the Kuwaiti border. But Rivera appeared in another live report from Iraq hours after the official announced his expulsion, and said he knew nothing of it.

"In fact, I'm further in Iraq than I've ever been," he said. "It sounds like some rats from my former network, NBC, are trying to stab me in the back."

Rivera left his job at CNBC in November 2001 to report from Afghanistan for Fox News.

Rivera said he had heard nothing about being expelled until he called network headquarters for the scheduled live broadcast.

"MSNBC is so pathetic a cable news network that they have to do anything they can to attract attention," he said. "You can rest assured that whatever they're saying is a pack of lies."

Nevertheless, as the day went on, Fox News executives pleaded with Pentagon officials to not expel Rivera. Pentagon officials stood their ground and insisted that Rivera go, and a deal was eventually reached, the Pentagon sources said.
