Going back to work...

I completely understand your frustration. I have a Master's degree in Organizational Psychology, but no work experience in that field (or much work experience at all besides the occasional retail work), so I can't seem to land a job.

I want to wish you a magical Good LUCK!!!

I feel your pain.. I left an IT job after lots of downsizing & I didn't want to travel. We adjust to me being a staying home Mom but I've volunteered quite a bit. I've been "looking" for almost 2 years. ie, I only look at jobs that are convenient for me. Anyway, long story short I've had several tough interviews that vary between you're overqualified for this job but then you don't have any recent experience.... you can't win. It's quite the downer.

Long story short, I am on my 4th and final interview (Thursday) with a company that I believe is a perfect match. I pray that God will open the right doors for you.

This is exactly what I'm dealing with! I'm overqualified for many jobs, but I don't have the experience. I have a Masters degree and I've even applied for jobs only requiring a high school diploma to be told that other candidates w/o a degree have a year's experience of volunteering in that field, which gives them an edge over me, who has taken numerous classes on the subject. SAY WHAT?! It's crazy. Best of luck with your final interview, I hope it's the one for you!

I would suggest going through contract agencies. Many companies don't hire direct to start, but have employees start as a contract worker, and if it's a good fit, they will hire them direct in 6 months or a year.

I second this. Going through a temp agency is how I got my "in" after being out of the workforce to have kids (Administrative/Accounting field). After my 6 month contract period was over, I was hired on with the company. Many companies prefer to go this route and will only hire contract employees and if they work out, then hire them on.

And try not to get too discouraged about the job market. Many, many people who have the relevant and recent experience aren't finding work either. I have former coworkers (still employed) who have been trying desperately to find other employment for over a year now with no luck. You just have to keep trying, it's a numbers game.

NOTE: When writing the resume, DO NOT use overworked words such as "team player", "track record of success",
"cross functional teamwork", "Strong communication skills", etc. Most software, and many people discard paperwork
with such phrases. Give EXACT details of successes. When I saw such wording, I didn't even read further. I thought
the candidate either did not have provable success or was just trying to throw buzzwords.

Haha!! LOL That is so true...if anyone came into an interview with me using those phrases, I would wonder if they haven't worked since 1986!
