Going back to 2D cartoons?

I just read on mouseguest21 that at the Comic-Con, {whatever that is} Disney has announced the return to traditional 2D hand drawn cartoons. "The Frog Princess" is currently in developement at the studios. It will be the first 2D cartoon since "Home on the Range" It is scheduled for release in 2008.
Anyone hear of this?

PS: I apologize if this has been mentioned already, or if it is not true. {Covered my butt on this one, didn't I?}

Comic-Con, {whatever that is}

Comicon is a convention that mostly covers the comic book industry, and is usually held in San Diego about this time of year...

As for the "Frog Princess," I don't recall it having been mentioned (and I try to read every single post in every single thread). I'm sure many others will echo my sentiment that the format matters less than the story. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Thanks Horace, I'm glad that I did not post some false info. But, isn't this some sort a "huge" thing, now? It wasn't that long ago that Disney, I guess, under Ei$ner, set out to eliminate the 2D hand drawn stuff. So, once again, is this not really "huge" news, bringing back hand drawn animation?

It's big, but Lassiter's been saying for a few years that 2D wasn't dead, and ever since the Pixar deal announcment, they've been hinting at this.

This makes me very happy... not because 2-D is better, but because throwing it out was stupid.... Computer animation may be great for lots of things, but 2-D fits others better, and I'd prefer to have a mix. Disney ... well all of the movie industry actually, has a real problem of doing one thing to death.

don't know if any frog prince can better the Robin Williams version though

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Walt Disney Studios has reunited with the directors of its box office disaster "Treasure Planet" as part of a plan to get back into the decidedly unfashionable business of traditional animation.

The new project, "Frog Princess," will put a female spin on the classic fairy tale, according to sources.

It will be overseen by John Musker and Ron Clements, who left the studio shortly after "Treasure Planet" bombed at the end of 2002, grossing just $38 million domestically.

In their heyday at Disney, they demonstrated their ability to spin a popular tale around a female protagonist with 1989's "The Little Mermaid." They also worked on such traditionally animated Disney musicals as "Aladdin" and "Hercules."

But traditional animation no longer draws the crowd, thanks in part the innovative computer-animation purveyed by Pixar Animation Studios, which Disney now owns. Pixar principals Ed Catmull and John Lasseter, who now run Disney's feature animation operations, are interested in exploring Disney's pioneering 2-D tradition.

One of Lasseter's first initiatives following Disney's acquisition of Pixar this year was to woo Musker and Clements back into the fold.

The brought back Musker & Clements to direct it... doubt after alll the bad blood they would have come back to make a TV movie.

This was one of their projects that they pitched years ago, when Disney Executives didn't think a movie that spoofed fairy tale conventions would make a popular animated film.

Look through the archives, when Disney shut down the 2d group, this place was crawling with people talking about how it was the right thing to do, because everyone wants 3d all the time.

Frankly, I don't care if its 3d or 2d or 12d. I'm just interested in a good, fun story when it comes to cartoon movies. And the last of 2Ds were terrible. Of course, most of the recent 3ds were bad too.

I agree with MJMcBride. The meduim, whether it's 2-D 3-D or whatever, is secondary to the story. Do any of your favorite movies have a bad story?
