Go With the Flow??

We're DVC so we know where we're staying, and we know we'll be back. For our upcoming trip, I made 5 ADRs for 8 days at our favorite eateries, and a couple of tee times for DH. That's it - and a couple of the ADRs might change. Other than that, we do what we feel like doing. The last time we tried commando mode was about 20 years ago when our son was small - even then we didn't care for it. We prefer the laid back approach.

We've become pretty efficient in our touring, ie we know what we like and hit only those attractions (for example: Little Mermaid? No thanks).

Knowing what time you're gonna hit something isn't important to me, but knowing how crowds build and traffic patterns around the parks are vital.

Please could you tell me where would I find info about "how crowds build and traffic patterns around the parks" :confused3
Thanks

This will be the first time I've made ADRs from my home. (except for princess meals) We are counter service people or have made meals in our FW cabin. We've also been lucky to walk up and get into restaurants (we've been during less busy times and not during free DDP) Although eating is a favorite past time of mine, I don't worry about where I'm eating when I'm at DW too much. We pretty much grab something and go!
I always have a plan in place regarding which parks we will visit on each day which we usually follow but I've never done a touring plan or minute-by-minute we-have-to-ride-this-before-that kind of thing. This trip, I've decided to try more ADRs and I think I'm going to print out some touring plans and explore that route. We will see how it goes!
I'm obsessed with my DW vacation planning because it makes the time go by faster until I get to the castle! I have lists of things to buy, bring etc taped to the walls of my office and I add tips and items from this board everyday.

We always just go with the flow. We have a general idea because we do make ADR'sbut other then that. I couldn't tell you what time I will be on what ride. We like others have said. No what rides we like and those are always on the hit list. It helps that our little ones are still little and there are rides that they can't do. Lots less on the must do list. (We don't like the baby swap thing.) We took a trip for our honeymoon and had no plans. Not even ADR's. This was 7 years ago!!!

For our next 10-day trip we plan only one thing a day at most......generally an ADR...but NOT every day. We just line up our most favorites and let everything else work itself out.

This trip is all planned out, since I'm going solo, and I like to have a detailed plan, right down to where and what I'm eating, what I'm wearing each day, and what rides I'm going to ride when, as well as when I'm going to see the shows. (Just a little OCD with this trip's plan.)

I also have another trip planned with a friend, and nothing is planned for it. The only thing we have reserved is our hotel room. We plan to go to a park each day, but to just do whatever.

I'm sure I'll have a great time on both of these trips, though prefer to have them more planned out. My 2009 (probably solo,) trip will be very planned out again.

I plan my adrs and thats all. If I want to go to Epcot when I am there and then eat at another park or resort I just hop on a bus. Thats why I always get the park hopper. When we get there if we plan on EMH then we deal with it there. I know that I always spend at least 10 days every trip and we will get to see everything eventually.

We go with the flow, 40 trips and not into schedules. No Disney dining plan either, not economical for the 2 of us and again we do not like eating to a place and time schedule. We're not TS people, WDW TS is over priced anyway. We share alot of meals, have picnic lunches at the pool and know where all our favorite sandwiches are. We check the EMH times, decide if we're going to attend and that's it. Sometimes we go to the bus stop and just get on the first bus that pulls up, no big deal, we're on property 10-12 night and have AP's and we always got to a different park in the evening. So much easier and relaxing, no rush, no schedule, see it as it comes.

100% planner ALL THE WAY! I've inherited this from my aunt! Our trips are planned out from morning to afternoons. This is the first trip that I've made ADR's, plus I was traveling with a 1 year old and 6 more adults. We only had 4 days to see everything, and the planning absolutely made the trip. We saw and rode everything we wanted to thanks to my Aunt's great work and TGM's site. Planning isn't for everyone, but it's made our trips wonderful! I'm not crazy down to the minutes because I realize that things happen, but I couldn't imagine doing it any other way!

In the days before Fastpass, when we lived in Chicago, we didn't have plans other than our meals, which often dictated which park we would visit on a particular day. We were up at dawn and closed down the parks, but what we did between those hours was determined based on crowds, our personal feelings, etc.

Now that I live by the parks (and with Fastpass) I plan a lot more because I only go for a few hours at a time. For example, at Epcot it might be rope drop, first ride on Soarin', get Soarin' FP and kill time in single riders on Test Track and then SSE, lunch after FP ride at a pre-reserved table service, then out. So I guess for me I want to have a plan when time is limited but I don't really care about having one if I'm going to be there all day.

I find that most of the planning that occurs, either with many of the details people post about on here or in our own experience, is done because of ADR's. First you make the ADR's, then you have to plan around them because the ADR's are in certain parks at certain times of day. It can get to be a lot like work.

We've been there and done that recently, mainly because we've gotten the free dining package once and then paid for the DDP twice since then.

We're thinking about going again in October, but we haven't even gotten a room ressie or park tickets. We don't need to do that bit of planning so early this year, because with the weak economy, I've seen every single resort with plenty of availability for the week we'd like to go, plus we're affected by the economy and I don't know yet if we can afford it, but will know by mid-August.

But even if we do go, we're not going to do the DDP. To really make the DDP worth it, you really need to plan out all your TS meals with ADR's, because the "savings" of the plan is that you get one TS meal per day. But we normally would never eat that much per day, nor do we need to spend that much per day this time. So if we make any ADR's at all, this time we'll make them the week we're there when we have a better idea of which parks we feel like going to each day. I'd be perfectly fine just getting counter service meals for the most part, and a big breakfast in the resort, with maybe a Hoop De Doo meal in the middle of the week (need an ADR for this, definitely) for a break from CS food. We used to do it this way before we ever tried the DDP, and I have to say it was a more relaxed way of doing this for us. Whenever we felt like having a TS meal, we never had to wait more than 45 minutes or so for a table at even some places like Le Cellier. With the weaker economy and the free dining package being done for the year by the time we go, I really think we can return to a less ADR-filled vacation.

The one area of planning we will probably stick to is heavy use of fastpasses. It requires a little bit of tactical planning each day at the parks, but isn't that involved, and conversely can lead to a more relaxed day overall because you have some time to have a break that would not be spent in a long standby line.

In short, though, we will definitely "go with the flow" more this time (if we can go) than the last several trips where we've had all our room reservations, park tickets, ADR's, etc. planned out weeks, even months, in advance.

I like to plan my restaurants, and I am relaxed about the parks because we hop and go where we want and we show up for our ressies. My former boss is really an overplanner. He and his wife even plan the times of their bathroom breaks:confused3

When my parents travel, they truly go with the flow. They may make one or two dining ressies ahead of time, and then see what they want to do when they get there. it has gotten harder and harder for them, but they get it to work out. Of course, they travel in slower times.

I book our ADR's adn the parks that we will be in that day. That's it.

I'm a planner...DH is not. So we meet in the middle. He lets me plan the meals and what park on what day but I give some wiggle room. Our evenings aren't planned because usually DH will say "let's just go do this" and without having somehting planned I won't get upset. We do pool time, park hop, DTD, DQ, visit family. Whatever it may be.

When we get to the parks we grab a guide and just go with the flow. I sort of have a jist of what I want to do first but it's not planned out.

I try to but planning restaurants is a must if you plan to eat. I have a lose plan which sometimes work and doesn't it gets changed alot depending on the kids, weather etc.

My wife and I are not heavy planners. We've been to the parks so many times that we've developed a method by which we tackle each park and handle EMHs that some people might mistake for a plan, but it's not.

I try to but planning restaurants is a must if you plan to eat.

No need to plan restaurants if you plan to eat. Just wait till you're hungry and grab some counter service food at one of the many, many choices each park has. True, it's not as relaxing as a TS meal (and I require at least one or two every trip), but it's a lot quicker than TS, you won't be turned away, and it's easier to be flexible with park-hopping this way.

Does anyone just go with the flow? I have been reading some of these threads and I can't believe some of the details people have planned. The only thing we plan is our dining and I suppose what park/resort around the dining. I don't know, I can't plan hour by hour and ride and park like it seems some do. Maybe I'm just not in the loop??:confused3

This is our first trip - and I've done a lot of planning. My DH is a heart attack survivor so I want to avoid high stress rides. And my DDs are 40 inches tall but are only 4 years old - so there are rides to skip for them due to the scare factor. So I do have ADRs set, and do have a list of rides I'd like us to try to do in each park while we are there. I even went as far as to group the rides together by location - to minimize their doubling back. Now I don't know that we'll make every ride, but at least I know which ones are okay to go to.

I would hate for someone to have a meltdown wanting to get on a ride they can't - DH crying is not a pretty sight. :)
