Go when pg or with a small infant??

I was just at my daughter's 2nd well-visit at our pediatricians today.. I spoke with our Dr. and told her that we are planning a trip to Disney when the baby is born. She told me as long as we wait till the 6-7 week point has passed. That is when they are at most risk of getting anything..especially on the airplane. She did say that going with a newborn is much easier because all the little baby will do is drink and sleep.. We're hoping to wait till the 2 month point!! I'm at the point that I hope this baby comes early!!! As much as I can't wait for our baby to arrive, I can't wait to go back to Disney! :earsgirl:

I went at 32 weeks and had a great trip. My doctor was fine with it we flew down....we took it slow....and had an amazing last childless trip. Of coure I didn't have a 2 year old to look after....that might be a challenge :) We just went with our DD at age 23 months and again at 25 months and although challenging was so rewarding. I would go before you have the baby as a special time with your DD. After all she will have some major adjustments to make once the baby gets here.

If you decide to go while pregnant, you better check your insurance benefits first. When I was pregnant, I couldn't go more than 2 hours from home or the insurance company stated they could refuse payment. I forget (6yrs ago) at how many weeks this rule into affect. I had a POS type of insurance where everything (down to the smallest detail) had to be pre-approved. I guess they figured if I was too far away, I couldn't deliver at my pre-approved hospital with my pre-appoved doctor.

We've taken two different trips with infants (6wks and 6 months). They are very easy at that age.

Have fun and congrats on that nice little windfall from McDs.

........... but I took my dd(then5) on a Disney trip when my little one was 4 months old and left the baby home with Nana for the week...
I don't know if that is an option for you, but it served a couple of purposes for me.... first of all, I was able to get a week of full night's sleep.. secondly, our older daughter was an only child for 5 1/2 years before the baby was born - so the new baby was quite the shock to her system and it did her good to have a week "alone with mommy". My husband stayed at home but works midnights so as I said, the baby stayed with Nana.
Please let me add, I was not breast feeding so that wasn't an issue.
I know, I know - you will all tell me what a bad mother I am for that - but I honestly think that it was the best thing I could have done.
I'm actually going back with dd (now 6) in 2 weeks for a 4 day trip - again, without the baby (now 14 months) who is staying home with daddy (taking a few nights off work for special daddy/baby bonding time)

Should I take cover now for all the yelling at I'll get?????

Kelly -

I for one won't yell at you. Then again DH and I left BOTH kids and went to the Rocky Mountains for a week last fall! Part of why I am going while PG is that I don't want to leave a new baby with Nana for a week 1. I BF for most of the first year (maybe a whole year this time) and 2. My kids Nana has her own special brand of brainwashing that we have decided not to subject our kids too - not even a little infant! :rotfl2:

Do what's best for your family. I think that it is a great idea to do something special with an older sibling after the baby comes, especially when there is a longer space between kids. :flower:

I would take the trip close to the last date that you can if pos. then your dd will be able to really enjoy the trip. IMO older tots 2.5 and up enjoy it more and more as they grow. Also preggers, you cant enjoy yourself, many rides have warnings :scratchin

Andrea,

I just wanted to say what an awesome attitude you have about your birthday. My MIL's birthday is Sept. 11 and all we hear every year is about how she hasn't had a birthday since 911 and nobody cares about her birthday anymore etc, etc. (We live far away but we always send a nice present, this year we were able to take her out to dinner, her dh always takes her out, she is not neglected in the slightest.)

My anniversary is on 9/11, and 2 years ago, we were in a rest. celebrating with friends, and someone came over to our table (after the staff did a big loud happy anniversary song with candles and popping baloons), and said they felt sorry for us, having such a *crappy* anniversary. Well, my DH just looked at the witch and said *like hell, Ill be damned if Id call 13 happy years of marriage crappy*. I was so proud, not to mention that we were doubly thrilled, just having found out that we were preggers :flower3:

I would go in Dec - it is a great time to visit - the parks aren't as crowded and it is so wonderfully decorated for Christmas!!! The tree at the Grand Floridian is breathtaking!! The weather is usually nice too! My DD loves having her picture taken with Santa Goofy!!! Traveling with a 3 month old is usually easy (at least my kids always traveled easily!!)

Oh, my birthday is Sept 11 too! (Its still a good day for a birthday!)

Enjoy your trip!!!!

Haven't gone to DW preggers but I went with a 4 month old and it was great. We used the baby bjorn and a stroller. The baby slept most of the time and we made use of the baby centers. I would go after the baby is born and make it a special trip for your daughter since that will be the time she needs something special for her and extra special attention. Have a wonderful time and CONGRATULATIONS on winning the trip! I remember the promotion at McDonalds! You must have been so EXCITED!

I haven't read all the posts, but here's my two cents...

I've done it both ways and there are definite differences. I don't think one is better or harder than the other, just different. As you know from your previous child, babies are super portable. They are no harder out and about than home. A few precautions needed to be taken if going pregnant, but nothing too bad.

I would make the decision based on what it is you want to miss/alter. For example, do you want to not go on certain rides (pregnacy restricted). It's a lot more uncomfortable to go pregnant in crowds & heat than with a small infant in the cooler, off season.

There is baby swap to help you with an infant. Along with baby care centers and a plethra of changing tables & benches when not near the baby care center.

It could also be the special trip pre baby or a wonderful trip for being a great big sister.

I guess basically I'm saying, you can't go wrong either way.

I just wanted to update you all on our decision and to thank you for all the wonderful replies.
Well, my OB and DH work pretty much made our minds up for us. My OB does not think flying for me while pregnant is a wise option in my first trimester or last, I am extremely high risk at this point due to previous miscarriages with complications and a very problematic pregnancy with DD, and DH cant get vacation time except for this summer in July or until thanksgiving and after. SO-it looks like the first weekend in December is when we are going!

I am so scared at the thought of taking a 3 month old baby to WDW along with my DD who will be 32 months then, but hopefully it will work out! I have a ton of questions as we are WDW virgins also so all your help will be appreciated!! thanks so much!

I went last year when I was about four months pregnant. I was a little tired by the end of the day, but other than that it went very well. Since my son was only about 20 months, it worked out that we were able to go on the same rides. Just remember to bring lots of snacks if you do it while you are still pregnant...there were many times when I was famished and ready to pass out from waiting too long to eat. I definitely wouldn't want to do it much past seven months into any pregnancy though. That's a lot of walking and can cause more trouble than it's worth.

If it were me, though, I would rather go with a three month old. I nurse my little one now, and it's pretty easy to feed him anywhere (even on the rides if I would have to). They sleep a lot and are pretty used to being in their carseats. You just might have to get used to carrying them around all day!

Congratulations!
