Go To Disneyland !!!

DaveO

Thanks for the great trip report. I love DL as well, but have not been back in a while and our last three trips to a Disney property have been to WDW, with a 4th scheduled for this fall. Too bad about your Blue Bayou experience, I understand they recently changed the menu. I rank the Blue Bayou as one of my most favorite, if not my most favorite, spot at any Disney park. I also agree with you totally about Legoland.

I really enjoy the DL version of Pirates, I'm a bit bummed I won't be able to see it with the changes for a while. I agree with you about Splash, I enjoy the boats at the WDW version more (also think the WDW version is longer with some different show scenes). While I can't wait for our WDW trip this fall, I need to find an excuse to get back down to DL next year when they reopen the Sub ride. I may have some points that I'll need to find a use for next year, perhaps the Grand Californian? (all depends on when DW wants to go back to WDW, we'll see after our trip this fall).

After reading your trip report I can't wait to go next month. I grew up with DL so it will always be my favorite.

Oh no!

I forgot how much I loved  DL and now I want to return. :sunny:

I completely agree on Universal. A waste of time & money.

Thank you for reminding me how beautiful DL is.

Great trip report! I also prefer DL to MK so glad you had a gret time! :thumbsup2

Glad you had a great time. We went to DL in May and enjoyed it as well. We also stayed at Paradise Pier and had a great time. We're looking forward to going back next spring and trying out the GCH. Thanks for the trip report!

I just returned form 12 days is CA and went to DL using my DVC points. I would recommend to everyone if posible to use some points and visit DL. I was hesitant at first but as you can see in my trip report below it is a must do for any Disney fan!!!

Glad you enjoyed Disneyland. I have always felt the original Disney park has always been the best Disney park. I know I'm biased being a California native who has visited the park all my life. The Grand Californian is a great hotel, and definitely rivals WDW's deluxe resorts. We find the service there to be much better than WDW's service.

We enjoy Universal, but I prefer Disneyland also. I think Universal's appeal is the fact that is is a real, working studio. You can see things there you cannot see at any other theme park. Did you take the backlot tour? Currently, the tour goes through the Desparate Housewives set and the War of the Worlds airplane crash scene, among other sets. These are actual sets where those shows have been filmed.

But for what it costs for one night in a standard room DL hotel, you could stay one night in a 1-bedroom at a DVC resort in WDW. I just stay off property in DL.

I went for the first time in my adult life (I think I went once when I was a kid, almost 25 years ago) near the end of August last year, about five months before a WDW trip.

It was nice - but I think I prefer MK (and I'll admit I grew up with trips there every few years.) The big problem was what some people like best - the space. It's just so darn cramped! It's livable during the day, but when the fireworks or Fantasmic are going, it was nightmarish! We weren't able to watch the fireworks (which I regret, after seeing video of them since then) because there were ropes up everywhere and cast members with flashlights hurrying you along and telling you to move if you stop. You're basically stuck in a narrow one-way corridor during the fireworks. During Fantasmic is slightly better, but still nuts - it's amazing that they're able to put the show on with no real bleachers, like at MGM.

Next time, I guess we'll have to camp out early to get a seat to watch Fantastic or the fireworks.

As for the attractions - the new Space Mountain is terrific, no question (but the WdW one is still lots of fun.) Indy was quite good though I'm not sure that it's that much better than Dinosaur. The queue at Indy was good, though - many of the DL rides have very basic queues compared to the MK ones, and you're more likely to be out in the sun.

HM was about equal except for the new floating Leota, but presumably MK will get that. Pirates was slighly better but not significantly so. I didn't get a chance to try Splash as the line was just too long. And why doesn't Matterhorn have Fastpass?

It is nice to see the original Tiki Room, instead of the debacle at WDW, and the Jungle Cruise has the fun piranha - but no tunnel. And DL does have Mr Toad's.

I did enjoy our meal at Blue Bayou, and can't comment on the hotels as we stayed off-propery. (Next time I'll probably use points for the DL Hotel.)

On the other hand, DL doesn't have PhilharMagic, Stitch's Great Escape (OK, I prefer Alien Encounter but this was not too bad), and the dining at MK is much more extensive, at least from what I saw. Outside of Blue Bayou, what else is there that is a gotta-do, dining-wise?

Then there's CA Adventure... Screamin' was closed when we were there (after the death), and overall there really wasn't much too it. I hated the Pier area (that's exactly what I do to Disney parks to AVOID), Tower of Terror can't compete with the WDW one (especially the theming outside), and Grizzly River Run is fine but it's just a regular raft ride that you can get anywhere. Soarin' didn't do much for me and has a better queue than the WDW version but otherwise it's identical.

If you've been to WDW, the only reason to see CA Adventure is the Electrical Parade and maybe Screamin' IMHO. I can also confirm that yes, the locals don't like CA Adventure at all, at least my friends who live there. The park was nearly abandoned despite the crowds at DL when we were there.

Ultimately - Walt really learned from the problems of DL with MK - the extra space means not just more room for people, but most attractions get more of their own space, the castle is much more impressive (but that's just one person's opinion), there are more dining options, there are more hotels... and that's not even counting Epcot, MGM, AK, etc.

Both DL and MK are excellent parks and well worth a visit, but the cramped quarters of DL really were a bummer and unfortunately, that's one of the main memories I took away, of the fireworks crush. Next time I'm in LA though, I'll definitely be back. :)

Groucho,

I can see where you are coming from from the crowd standpoint. We did get a good set in front of the castle about one hour before the fireworks. It was a mad house after they were done.

In my case I guess I preferred the intimate feel of the park with the much more lush suroundings. I guess I noticed a lot more details in the rides and the surroundings that I really enjoyed. It just "felt" more 'magical' than the MK to me. From a ride perspective yes they were about the same with some differences but for me it was the overall experience that was better and far exceeded my expectations.

I did miss AK and especially EPCOT.

For CA Adv I think they really need to add some unique attractions that can only be found in that park ... I think that would help a great deal. I want to have a reasin to visit both coasts in the future and having unique attractions in all parks will make me want to do that.

Thanks DaveO for your great report. My family is headed to SoCal this month. I've been wanting to do this for years and we finally decided just a couple of months ago that this was the year! I didn't want to give up my DVC points for this trip (I know it would have been a great way, but I just love WDW TOO much!! LOL!!), so instead we are going for our usual 2 week WDW trip in August and added a two week SoCal trip. We are staying at GC for the last part of our trip (just called and was very fortunate to get a room!) so I was so happy to hear that you liked it. I've always wanted to see the original MK and (thank goodness) my family thinks like me and can't wait to compare the two. We all know how lucky we are to be able to do these two fabulous trips within two months. I enjoyed reading your report and hope my family has as wonderful a time as your family did.

Again, thanks for taking the time to write a report!!

Mim, the WDW total WDW crazed fan hoping to become a SoCal fan too!!
