Gluten Free Dining Review!!!

Does anyone know offhand if gluten free breads tend to be dairy and egg free also? I know that Vans waffles are dairy and egg free in addition to gluten free. I really enjoy those.

Very helpful thread. Thanks.

I am also allergic to dairy, and gluten free breads for the most part are dairy free, although many times they are not. There are lots of cookies and other items which are milk containing, and for the most part breads that are similar to white bread are going to be dairy free. It's bigger bread (like if you find bread that seems "doughy") that you always need to check. I use hamburger buns for my bread on my sandwiches and that is pretty good and dairy free. Also, I have flax seed bread for toast which is also veyr good and dairy free.

As for egg free, I wouldn't know that sorry. I mean on a lot of the pastry items it says egg free, but as for bread I am unsure.

Hope that helped!

It's so uplifting to hear how well Disney is taking care of ALL their guests. Thank you for such an informative thread! :thumbsup2

Has anyone ever gotten gluten free fish and chips at Rose & Crown? Fried fish is my daughters favorite but she has celiac.

No. I don't believe it is available. I also think we asked once at Harbour House in MK and they didn't have any.

For the most part no. I have one daughter who is gluten free and the other who is egg free. The only thing that they both can eat is Vans waffles and some of Ians foods.

I didn't know this list existed, very interesting.

Ahhhh, the list, the wonderful list. Send an e-mail to: (oooo, I can't insert the e-mail address because I've only posted two times in this forum so far. send a message to me here on the boards and I'll post it back to you) and they'll send you a number of attachments with information on gluten-free eating. I've been doing my research for our late August trip to WDW - our first visit where we'll be staying onsite AND eating with the dining plan. I've been gluten-free for 13 years and have NEVER been able to eat food that wasn't prepared by me, so I'm pretty excited about it.

What I'm looking for now are actual reviews of celiacs who have eaten at any of the restaurants on the resorts or the parks and what they liked. I listen to the Dis Unplugged podcasts and the food reviews there, but it may be a different review from the celiac point of view.

This thread was started in 2007, so I'm working my way from the present back. I am really looking forward to the review that you provided, MetsFan. Yahoo! Thank you for taking the time to write it - it's a wonderful thing! Eating out at new and different places while on vacation is something that I have sorely missed over the past 13 years. Now I have it to look forward to with our trip to Disney World!

First off, before I discuss how Disney wonderfully accommodated my family and I with a food allergy, I just want to explain to those who don’t have Celiac Disease exactly what it is. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease where the body cannot process gluten. When a person with Celiac ingests gluten, it flattens the villi in the small intestine, which can lead to malnutrition, cancer, depression, and many other ailments. Gluten is found in grains such as wheat, malt, barley, and rye, which means a person with Celiac must avoid even the smallest contact with such foods as bread, pizza, pasta, and other various items.

When we booked our Walt Disney World vacation, we made sure that when making dining reservations on the 407-WDW-DINE line, we indicated on every reservation that we had an allergy to wheat/gluten. This allowed the servers at the restaurants to accommodate us, but I will get to this in a second. Here are my restaurant reviews for those with Celiac.

We were at Disney from August 27-September 1, 2007.

Whispering Canyon Café in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge- We went into the Lodge for dinner on our first night. As our first dining experience with the allergy, we were incredibly flattered that the maitre de told us that the chef would be out to talk to us. As I looked on the menu, I was bombarded with menu items such as corn bread and meats covered in barbeque sauce, items I knew I couldn’t have. The chef came out and asked what I wanted, and I told him that I was interested in ordering the skillet. He said no problem, just avoid the corn bread (which we declined altogether for the other members of our party), and he said he just wouldn’t put croutons in my salad. As well, he asked how a nice, gluten free brownie with vanilla ice cream sounded. A brownie? I hadn’t heard that word spoken in a restaurant in a very long time. The food and dessert were GREAT and we were looking forward to a great vacation with great dining options.

Chef’s De France- At this gorgeous restaurant in Epcot, they were a little less knowledgeable than the previous dining experience. The chef told me there weren’t as many options as I’d like, but offered to bring in gluten free pasta, something that sounded delicious. But I ended up deciding on a plain pork chop with French fries, which was quite delicious. The chef told me that at most Walt Disney World restaurants, the French fries are fried in a dedicated fryer, which means they are gluten free. The problem with places such as McDonalds and Burger King is that the fries are put in the same fryer as the fried chicken, leading to big cross contamination issues.

Chef Mickey: I have been to Chef Mickey many times for breakfast and dinner, but for the first time they offered a special lunch, which we made reservations for. The chef came out to tell me that there were limited gluten free items available at the buffet, and the majority of my lunch consisted of lime chicken and seasoned potatoes, which were delicious, but I would have liked some additional choices. I recommend coming here for a typical breakfast buffet, where I have heard they even make special Mickey waffles for those with Celiac.

Ohana- For dinner the next night we went to Ohana, which was a delight. The meal started with special wanton chips and sauce, both of which I couldn’t have. The chef came out and informed me that he would bring out some tortilla chips and special sauce to accommodate me, which was lovely. He also brought out separate wings and shrimp, both of which didn’t have the regular sauce, but were still very good. The only meat on the skewer that I could have was the steak, but by then I was already full from the wings and shrimp. For dessert, instead of the bread pudding (an obvious no-no), I had a big bowl of pineapple, which fit in nicely to the Hawaiian theme. Everything was great.

Mama Melrose: For this day, we made last minute reservations here for lunch. The chef was very nice and accommodating, and was from the EXACT town that we were from. He informed me that gluten free pasta was readily available, and I decided on the chicken parmesan with penne. I also had an awesome ceaser salad (no croutons) before the main meal. As he brought the food out, he said that if we had made the reservation a drop earlier, he could have prepared some gluten free breading to put on the chicken. The pasta looked so delicious, I don’t even think it would have mattered. This was an absolutely wonderful place to eat.

A note about the resorts and Counter Service restaurants throughout W.D.W.- Whether you are eating in your resort’s food court, or you are at any Counter Service restaurant, just ask to see the chef and they will accommodate you. At the Caribbean Beach Resort food court, the chef made me a hamburger with a gluten free bun and French fries. At The Launching Pad in Tomorrowland, we looked at the ingredient list to make sure that the Turkey Legs were gluten free (they are).

In conclusion, if you have ANY allergy, whether it is Celiac Disease, lactose intolerance, an allergy to eggs or anything else, the key is to let them know in advance by marking it on the reservation. The staff of the Walt Disney World resort was extremely accommodating, and we were incredibly pleased with everything. My suggestion is to also get in contact with the restaurant ahead of time to know what you can specifically have. Just request this number when making the reservation. And remember, have a great meal!!!

If anyone has any specific questions, please don't hesitate to PM me!

I am in heaven! Just what I've been looking for....food reviews from the celiac's point of view. Do you think many of these menu choices have changed over the past couple years? I'm penciling in the choices that you've listed here to help determine where to make our ADRs for our late August visit to WDW.

This is just wonderful - it exceeds my expectations in every way. We visited WDW in 2004, but I was terrified to eat anything that I didn't prepare myself, so we stayed offsite and I lost a lot of time cooking for myself, not to mention driving back & forth, and sometimes having to sit and watch DH and his brother & sister eating scrumptious food.

I can scarcely believe that I'll actually be able to order things like breaded chicken or gravy or brownies in a restaurant - a foreign concept since my celiac diagnosis 13 years ago.

Thank you for posting this - you've made my day!

I was quite nervous too! LOL

I had gotten info from the lady who works for WDW special foods, whose name escapes me at the moment, [Brenda Bennet, whew, I do have a brain cell left. LOL] and I knew what GF foods were available and where. Other pizza places carry the GF pizza also, but it is an adult CS credit. At Pizza Planet, all credits are the same.
I just went up and said "I need a Gluten Free pizza meal, and then I need yada, yada, yada...."
They informed me it would be a few minutes extra, which was fine, and then offered to bring it out to us when it was done! EXCELLENT service there. I was really surprised how quick and easy it was.

Happy to answer any other questions, or to look up Brenda Bennet's info for anyone!

I wondered how it would work with counter service inquiries. Brenda Bennett has been extremely helpful to me, too, and has provided me with a lot of useful information. She told me that if I filled in the names of the counter service places that we planned to visit, she'd notify them of my impending arrival and request for gluten-free food. However, we won't always know where we're going to be for breakfast or lunch each day - only for the evening ADRs.

And Pizza Planet! In 2004 when we last visited WDW, I sat outside Pizza Planet eating my food-brought-from-home while DH and his brother & sister got pizza from inside.... I had no idea that I could have eaten there myself. A lesson learned late....but in time for our upcoming trip in late August. Woohoo! :cool1:

We went to WDW aug 07.both me and my dd have celiac. The chef came out and talked to us everywhere except for chef mickeys.LTT was our favorite. They made us gluten free gravy and macaroni, but the best part was the desert they made us,it was amazing.the chef was smiling so big when he brought it out to us.At garden grill we had everything except the cat fish then we had a special desert, gluten free brownie with berries.most places gave us brownies for desert.
There were alot of choices at crystal palace for breakfast,we decided not to have waffles beacuse there was so much to pick from.at 50's prime time we had chicken pot pie,it was sooo good.Gluten free hamburgers and fries at sci fi. I had spagetti at Tonys and my DD had the pizza, the pizza was really good,We had steak at konas and Le Cellier. The chef was abit grouchy at coral reef but we still got a great meal. We were also given warm buns at almost every place, and they were really good.
We didnt get sick at all on the trip.

We had the most amazing expereince dining gluten free at WDW in January. It was so great not to have to worry that we are returning for my DD's 21st bday in June. We will actaully be celebrating with a gluten free birthday cake at the California Grill and we can't wait. Both my DD and I are gluten free and our favorite place to go is WDW. They do an amazing job!

Hi All! Just wanted to update on some awesome gluen free food: Ron at SSR does an amazing job. Homemade hand breaded with rice flour chicken nuggets and fries at the counter service they were phenominal. We went back twice! Also Turf Club was awesome, Ron again made up an amazing menu for us with gf pasta, superb meal! One of the best we had!

At MK the bakery has gf treats - the brownies were delicious and they had choclate chip cookies too. Also don't foget Mickey on a stck ice cream.

California Grill was awesome and the cake line provided a really good gf spice type cake with tons of frosting for my DD birthday dinner. I ate that cake everyday all week!

Last but not least - Kona Kafe amazing as always. Went there twice and highly recommend the fruit and choclate fundu with gf macaroon cookies = Yummy!

I went GF to WDW in October, and it was great! I'm heading back this October. The Food & Wine Festival was a little risky because of the cross-contamination potential, but I still took a chance. I didn't feel well both days after eating a hamburger at Cosmic Ray's and at the Liberty Inn, but I don't know if it was due to the burger or the bun (Ener-G, I think). Those were the only problems that I had. Oh, and jealousy was an issue as well. Watching my sister eat funnel cake with powdered sugar made me a little green-eyed!

we did TS at Jiko and at California Grill. Jiko was good, but California Grill was fabulous! I had the pork tenderloin there. The flatbreads looks scrumptious, but obviously it's not something that we can eat. I wish they'd find a way to make those GF! I didn't have dessert at either TS restuarant: I was too full at California Grill, and I wasn't in the mood for the options that Jiko had.

We're definitely going to do California Grill again this time. I think our other TS meal will be Citrico's.

The brownies! I had forgotten about the brownies. I bought a stack of them at the Main Street Bakery (they're the French Meadow Bakery brand), and I ended up liking them so much that I've ordered from them a few times since then! I am going to have to order a cake this time just to test it out! :goodvibes

Back from our 9 night, 8 day free dining trip. We have Wheat and Peanut/Tree nut issues (non-celiac, non-anaphalactic). This is for my ds10 (adult on plan) and dd5.

We had 9 sit down meals.

1) Crystal Palace - had an 8:30 am ADR, park opened at 9 am. We arrived to the park shortly after 8 am and were seated very quickly. We were out the door 9:06 am.
I did not think to discuss the allergies when we arrived, and was not offered a chef, though I have been at this location before. We felt comfortable with the food available and being able to discern what had nuts and what didn't.
Kids were very happy with eggs, meat, potatoes, and fruit.
Food here is great, and I have had good luck with chefs before, but make sure you speak up. This is the only place that did not notice our allergy note this trip.

2) Liberty Tree Tavern, dinner. Family style Thanksgiving type dinner, no longer a character meal.
LTT goes above and beyone. The chef was fantastic, as were our servers. They did not bring food to the table until the chef had arrived and discussed.
They were able to eat the salad, were served GF rolls, I think they were able to eat the green beans out of the bowl, but might have had them on their plate (can't rememeber), not the dressing or mac and cheese (wheat), and were served meat and potatoes on their own plates (and were given enough for 2 or 3 people EACH!!!) They also were served their own GF gravy.
For dessert they had ice cream while we had cobbler. They also allowed other people in the party to have just plain ice cream if desired.

This is the 2nd. good experience we have had here, and I will be back!

3) Tusker House in AK for lunch. Another excellent experience. I got kind of worried at the last minute that they would be limited here, due to the ethnic foods with wheat and nuts, but Chef Mary came out and showed me all the available foods. She also offered Flat Bread, which was the GF pizza crusts sauted in some safe oil. Kids loved it. They were able to eat some veggies, fruits, meats, and mashed potatoes.
For dessert, Mary offered GF brownie, GF choc. Chip cookie, and GF fresh made cinnamon sugar donuts that they offer at breakfast. I thought we had to choose, and the kids chose donuts, but they were also brought the individually packaged brownies and cookies. The LOVED LOVED LOVED the donuts, a very rare treat for them. We took the cookies & brownies with us.
Cookies were Enjoy Life Foods, which we love. Brownies were those GF ones available everwhere.

Side note: I noticed a basket of the GF brownies at the food court at All Star Sports, so that was cool.

We were not a huge fan of the foods at Tusker, though it was ok. We're not very adventurous eaters. But we might try breakfast some time.

4) Ohana, dinner - This was the HUGE success of the trip. One of the CMs was chatting with us in the lobby, and said the Chef, TJ, was excellent with Food allergies. I recognized the name from these boards, as he used to work at Boma and was well thought of.
I was worried about cross-contam here with the peanut dipping sauce, but we were the first at that table for the day, AND they kept that sauce off our table at my request.
The only thing they were allowed to have with the rest of us was the salad and veggies. BUT...Chef TJ brought them an appetizer of GF sticky chicken wings served on a bed of mashed potatoes to make it look like a Polynesian long house. [Forgot a pic!]
Their main course was skewers of all the meats, cooked safely, over a mountain of rice, topped with fried rice noodles.

And for dessert...A skewer of GF brownies, ice cream, and bananas, stuck in a piece of pineapple, topped with hershey's syrup.

They were in HEAVEN!
I'll post pics later when I get them loaded. They couldn't even eat most of it. We were all picking at it.

My only complaint is it takes so much longer for their food, that we were all done with each course and onto the next before they got theirs. I think if we had had a better waiter, we might have suggested he delay ours to match theirs, but in the end it was ok. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant, especially if TJ sticks around there for a while!

More in the next post.

5) Chef Mickey's - Breakfast. We have had some success here in the past with chefs, but this one was GREAT! Chef Matt came out, walked me through, informed me that they had eliminated much of the peanuts/treenuts so as to make more food available to everyone.
He pointed out the safe foods...eggs, meat, most fruit, potatoes.
Then he offered to make Mickey waffles from Bob's red mill mix and rice milk (which is fine, but not necessary for us), and we accepted!
The kids adored them, and were also given individual servings of sealed, GF pancake syrup. The chef checked back several times which was very thoughtful.

6) 1900 Park Faire, dinner. We were not overly impressed with this place, but as far as service and chef contact went, it was ok. Plenty of safe foods, and ice cream for dessert. Not as helpful as others, but I could get by.
My biggest complaint is that they had 13 of us crammed at a 4 and 6 top pushed together. I literally had to stand on my chair and climb over to get out and get more food. [Not attractive while pregnant.] The tables are so close you couldn't slide your chair back far enough to get out, and our chairs were so close side by side there was no way to get between them. I will not be back.

7) Rose and Crown, dinner. Very helpful staff! DS had a steak and mashed potatoes, dd had grilled chicken and french fries. Seemed very willing to accomodate their tastes, but they were happy with the menu choices.
For dessert they had sundaes minus the chocolate disk (nut warning). Love this place! Definately will be back.

8) Biergarten, lunch. - Chef was offered, but I declined. I was familiar with the foods there. Waiter said that at ANY time if we needed the chef, he would get him. As we do not worry about trace, I was comfortable here, but I bet a lot of the meat has trace, so always ask!
Plenty of meat and potatoes and veggies. There was a fruit compote and pudding they both liked. We love this place.

9) Le Cellier, lunch. Waiter and chef were excellently attentive. DD had carrots and celery and ranch dip (I assumed the dip was safe, because the chef hadn't said anything, but double check for yourself!), grilled chicken, and french fries. DS had a Filet Mignon (minus sauce), and mashed potatoes.
Cheese soup is made with a flour rue, I asked!
For dessert dd had a sundae, and ds had a bowl of ice cream. Sorbet might be safe, ask. Not sure about creme brulee.
This is our FAVORITE place in all of WDW. The steaks are excellent, and I could have licked the mashed potatoes off my plate. LOL

I will come back later today or tomorrow and post our GF counter service experiences. Hope this helps! :wizard:

Bump....

Heading in December and I am celiac....would love to hear more recent experiences.

Thank you in advance!!!!!

We where just there last November ad are headed there again this November and every place was amazing! No issues what so ever my Daughter was treated like a princess and was able to eat anything!

This coming trip is actually her 10th bday and we ordered a specialty GF cake for her!

We visited in April of 08. It was a kinda last minute girls trip. Me 2 DDs and my MIL. Myself and my youngest dd both are celiac.

We at at 50's prime time DD had steak and potatoes and I had the roast beef with no gravy (didnt know it was an option). We also had an amazing brownie dessert.

I have photos and Im going to try and figure how to post them (im a newbie).

We had breakfast at Cinderellas castle. It was ok I thought, we really enjoyed the experience though. The waffles were a lil dry and DD only ate a few bites but the fruit was great.

We also ate at toy story pizza planet which has the Amys Rice crust cheese Pizza the salad was tiny and not worth the money but I love amys pizza.

Cosmic Rays was good ok for a quick bite. They had hamburgers and hotdogs on gluten free buns.

Tonys town Square had rice pasta and Tapioca rolls. It was very good.

Im excited to go back and try these new places!

Sorry I forgot to mention on my last post that we ate at Crystal Palace too and there was a great amount of stuff there too chose from the buffet.

Also at every single restaruant we went to the chefs came out and spoke to us and told us what was safe and we felt pretty special not not like a burden like we do at home sometimes. They are fully aware of the cost to us and are so helpful.

We just got back from another gluten free trip to WDW. Some of the food highlights included Boma for breakfast (Chef Frank made me the best GF waffles I've ever had) and Boma for dinner (Chef Allison had GF Zebra Domes :banana::banana:). We also ate at Citrico's, Jiko, and Turf Club which were all excellent as usual. We tried Sanaa for the first time and I really enjoyed the chicken and shrimp curry. Another big change is that a lot of the CS restaurants are now offering the AllergyFree Foods Chicken Tenders. I tried them this trip for the first time and they were excellent!!!

I did have one mishap this trip at Hoop Dee Doo. I've never had this happen in Disney before and I think it was really just a fluke, but I did have a gluten reaction (haven't had one since Jan.) I called the Chef the next day; he apologized profusely and we still can't figure out the source of the contamination. (I think it probably occured on the serving side and not in the kitchen, but I'll never be truly sure.) This time we had tier 1 seating and for me, it was just too close. During the show, they bring out fried chicken to your table and the actors put it right in front of some people - I would much rather have been in Tier 3 seating where I wouldn't have felt so nervous about all the fried chicken traveling around. The other possible issue is that during the show everyone raises their napkins and all I could think of was flying corn muffin crumbs coming down from the balcony! :scared1: (I have gone to the HDD last Dec, sat in Tier 3 and had no reaction.) Anyway - something to keep in mind if you're going there this trip.

I have some more reviews with pics in my signature and hope to post ones from this trip soon. Hope you have a great time!!! :cool1:
