Gluten free dining on board?

Anyone else eat GF? We're medically gluten free, and I trust Disney, but I'd love to hear from others who've sailed with them.

Thanks!

Sailed with tablemates several years ago, one of whom had celiac disease and required gluten free. Everything was done to meet health needs including different bread offerings, reviewing menus the day before and both our server and the chef spoke personally to the guest about her needs.

My DH is gluten free and the Dream did an amazing job this past August handling this allergy. We made sure it was noted in our reservation when we booked and the dinning staff discussed his needs the first night and each night at dinner he preordered for the next night. They also advised us how to handle the buffet and Castaway Cay. He said he ate like a king! No issues at all!

Just before Thanksgiving last year, my wife's Dr had her try gluten-free and dairy free. She has felt a lot better since then. Did a B2B this past January and she says she felt like she was treated like royalty. Each night in the MDR the head server would discuss the menu for the next night, and where we wanted to eat for brfeakfast and lunch the next day. For Cabanas buffet, she discussed options with a chef, and they prepared her food and delivered to our table. At Castaway Cay, had to go from Serenity Bay to Cookies to pick up the pre-ordered meal. NOTE: she would NOT recommend the dairy free/gluten free cheeseburger :-). Had both brunch and dinner in Palo and they worked with for both meals.

May I ask if you recall what the dessert options are in Palo? I *just* got diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity (three weeks before leaving for a cruise to ITALY of all places - this one on RCCL... BUT I plan to return to DCL soon), so I know my beloved chocolate souffle will be out. :( :( :(

Italy actually REALLY knows what they're doing with gluten free dining. I was talking to someone with celiac disease, who travels a lot for her work (she works for Schar -- a gluten free bakery). She told me she's more likely to get glutened in Iowa than in Italy.

Great to know! Thanks!!

I was worried about that too but I was pleasantly surprised with the service and attention to detail. I'm also allergic to dairy and I was concerned that I'd have to bring my own almond milk with me because I'm also allergic to soy. They have almond milk, plenty of gluten free items, I had pancakes, donuts and rolls with dinner. The first night at dinner might be an issue but your server will walk you through the menu and tell you what can be altered. From that time forward, you can order every meal at dinner the night before. I wasn't limited to a menu, my server simply asked me what I'd like and made it happen. I even ordered something that had egg in it (also allergic to eggs) and the chef wouldn't let me order it without alerting me first. It was nice to know someone was watching out for me.
Just make sure your travel agent enters your food allergies into your reservations and if you want a confirmation, take about 5 minutes to stop by the main dining room as soon as you walk onto the boat and go over your details with the people that make changes to dining times. I walked in expecting to have to explain everything, and they had all my dietary restrictions listed already and informed me they had almond milk.
I went to the buffet only once, for lunch the day we boarded so you'll be limited there, but we spent our time in main dining or the other dining rooms and wherever I chose to eat, they had my order from the night before ready to go.
Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions, I didn't have any problems and have nothing bad to say about our service, options and attention to detail.
I will tell you we didn't go to Palo or Remy (the specialty extra $$ restaurants on the Dream) so I don't know how things are handled there.

I think the quantity of options and quality of service vary greatly over the fleet. The Wonder does not have that great of a reputation with the GF people, myself included, but the Fantasy and Dream have great reputations.

I was not a fan of the gluten free food we had on the Magic. Of course, it was our first sailing, so I have no point of reference for comparison. The worst was the gluten-free food I pre-arranged for Castaway Cay lunch. It took about 30 minutes for us to get our food, even though we'd pre-ordered it, and it was truly terrible once we got it.

You could get gluten-free pizza on deck, and it was the only thing I liked (and I'm not a food fuss). The food was the one thing I disliked about the cruise. Liked almost everything else.

Does anyone know if the Magic is able to offer gluten free chicken tenders, Mac n cheese or pizza. These are my daughters favourites and I know WDW were able to offer those GF?

Glad to hear Italy is good as that is where are cruise goes and we are spending a few days there as well and I was worried for my daughter as she struggles with foods she likes

The Magic did offer gluten-free pizza. You had to ask for it & wait a few minutes for them to make it for you, but that was okay by me, as it was the only gluten-free food I actually enjoyed on the Magic.

Thank you. Hopefully there will be other food she might enjoy too.

Looks like I might be the first to tell you your chocolate soufflé is not out! I get one ever cruise. I was diagnosed with CD in between my first and 2nd cruise with Disney. I've been on 5 now and they are great. This was all in the last 2.5 years or so... The first night is fine too and actually the gf chicken dish that is usually served that night is one of the best meals I eat during the week. It is naturally gf so there is no issue with ordering it. They still will prepare yours in the gf portion of the kitchen. Palo brunch and dinner is amazing. For brunch dessert they have chocolate covered strawberries, that rich pudding/yogurt stuff, I can't think of the name but it is either fruit or chocolate flavored and basically always GF, they have this champagne jello thing with cream and berries. It's awesome.

But the regular meals are all great too. If day maybe once or twice I didn't love the options in cabanas. But then I'd get chicken tenders or something. For lunch we almost always eat at cabanas. You just get a chef to walk you through and they make your food in the back.

For dinner as others have said, you look at the menu for the next night and order what you want. A couple times I wasn't able to get all the parts I wanted, like in this last cruise I couldn't get the salad with goat cheese, but I did get gf fried Brie! Amazing. I actually have a pic of that and some other Disney cruise food on my Instagram account. I have the same name there if you wanted to see... In fact I'm pretty sure I have a pic of all the desserts they offered me in Palo because the waiter brought me everything.

Oh and for the chocolate lover- there's a couple of gooooood gf chocolate desserts in the dining. One is flourless choc cake and the other is a mouse like one. Both are great and part of the 'chef's choice' for dessert during the week. I also sometimes eat Mickey bars.

One tip I have is to bring your own gf crackers - if you do palo brunch and so you can have cheese from the buffet or room service.

Btw to the poster that asked- I cruised the magic once gf and I'm certain I had pizza and chicken tenders.

I'm a pro at it now so just let me know if you have other questions.

Oh and there's a blog gluten free in Orlando- she shared her dcl cruises with lots of info. So look her up.

On the Wonder, the Mac N Cheese was frozen from a box. They brought the box our for me to read the ingredients for DD. They then served it and DD hated it. Refused it. We tried to force her to eat it, but she fought us, so I took the typical parent bite to "see, it tastes fine". Well, I almost threw up. It was curdled and sour from the box. My partner then tried it...and same reaction. Our server smelled it as he was taking it back to the kitchen and agreed it was bad. Then the head guy came out to tell us there was nothing wrong with it. Anyways, my point is...try the stuff they are serving your kid. We also go "burnt" moldy gf rolls on the last night of the cruise.
