Gluten free Alaska

My wife is GF are we just sailed Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Sea and she had some really good meals. Their menus are marked very well with what is GF and options. Just throwing that out there, not Disney but better than moldy microwave Mac and cheese.

DCL does mark meals as GF on the adult menu, but for a kiddo, the meals are very limited, because a lot of the GF stuff is "fancy". Most nights, nothing on the kid's menu was GF...and my 4 year old does not have a taste for liver patte and ahi sashimi quite yet :)

does anyone know whether DCL monitors these boards? seems if they do they might improve their service on board?

As with everything, there are people who do a great job and people who don't. We have had allergy issues because food that was allegedly safe contained the allergen. What we have learned is that if we don't feel comfortable with the HEAD server, switch immediately. They are the ones communicating with the kitchen on your allergy needs. Servers may do a good job but allergies are the ultimate responsibility of the HEAD server. Having a great Head Server also means they will go out of their way to make sure meals in different spots on the ship (not just your dinner) are available and safe.

We have great relationships with a few servers that we have had multiple times through the years. We know they will look out for us regardless of the Head Server. We request servers because we have had too many times that we went with "pot luck" and ended up with a server who didn't understand/care and didn't pass along the importance to the head server.

I don't have a recommended Head Server on the Wonder. But ask and then call DCL to put in your request. I know it has saved us stress.

Honestly, I think that DIS ruins us allergy parents in to thinking that Disney is this magical cruise line that knows food allergies super well. We went in assuming that they would take great care of us and they did not...like most restaurants, we should not have and then did not let our guard down again. We had to stay on alert and make sure everything WAS safe. I am thankful I packed foods for our daughter, because sometimes waiting 45 minutes at quick service or the buffet was just too long for her when she was starving. It was our fault for assuming that Disney was going to be awesome and amazing and my expectations were high based on reviews. I read a few reviews of horror stories about parents with food allergy kids on the ships just having awful times, cross-contamination issues, etc. and in my head I chalked them up to "oh, they were not prepared, or oh they did not communicate their allergies properly" but we did EVERYTHING we were supposed to do and then some...and there were still multiple slips and issues in addition to the lack of going above and beyond like we had read about. Now that I think about it, I know of two people that had allergic reactions while on board and received epinephrine. One guy, I spoke to him personally, and he felt there was a cross-contamination issue, but was going to follow up with his doctor to make sure he had not developed a new allergy.

On a positive note, the health center treated both patients AMAZINGLY well! We packed a lot of Benadryl and a lot of Epi-Pens. We used the Benadryl twice for small reactions, but it stopped with the Benadryl. (The soft serve would sometimes give her a reaction, and sometimes not...almost like they did not clean out the machine well and another flavor had an allergen?)

Until I wrote this question, I too was assuming that it would be easy to manage our Celiac on the cruise, and it is very disappointing to hear how difficult it has been for others, but am thankful for all of this feedback because now I know that I need to pack a lot of food! I did book a brunch at Palo so am hoping they will let me order a gluten free pizza to takeout so that my kids can have it for lunch (3 of us are gluten free)...at least one day lunch might be fairly easy.

That's a great point, I would love to get a recommendation on a server who handles gluten free well from anyone returning from Alaska! I also was planning to ask if Chef Sean is still around.

I think it will be much easier to manage going in with the proper expectations. Good luck!

We were on a 12 night Magic in the Med in 2013. My GF DD had no issues that I recall. She loved the donuts but they ran out by Day 11. We are on the Magic again for 2016 (Norway/Iceland) so hopefully it will also be a good experience! As a side note, the most frustrating thing was actually when the ship ran out of Diet Coke on Day 7 - first at the drink station, then in the bars shortly after. It was extremely hot at the time which would account for some of the usage but, seriously, DCL couldn't plan better than that?
