Glucose Meter & Testing at the Parks

My glucose meter says not to expose it to extreme temps. However, we will be at Disney for 2 weeks in July. I have read from other posts that it is a good idea to test more often, but that would mean keeping my meter with me all day.

What has been your experience with your glucose meters and what do you do with them? Do you leave them at the medical center and go back there to test or do you keep it with you throughout the day? If you do keep it with you, have you had any problems with the functioning of the meter due to the heat?

We were there last week of August/first week of Sept last year. I carried my meter in the sweltering heat in my backpack and it functioned fine. :thumbsup2

Not in the sun is probably the most important rule.

Deep down in a light colored backpack should be no problem.

Under a seat in the car (if you drove to the park) is OK if the park is not so crowded you are not re-admitted when you go back to the car to get the meter.

In a Disney locker is a good bet.

What temperature range was published as bad?

Put it in an Insulated Bag. The bag should keep it within a smaller temp variasion. Also if you check while in an nice AC invironment the inside of the bag will stay at an even smaller variation. :thumbsup2

This worked with my daughters meter. :cool1: plus you must get into the AC for "Medical Reasons" ;)

Could you put in a small ice pack (in a ziploc bag so it doesn't leak!) inside an insulated bag with the meter? Or would that make it too cold?

You should post this on the disabilities board as well. They have a wealth of info over there.
I took my meter in my back pack but I went in Nov/Dec. so it wasn't to terribly hot.

I have taken my meter every year and every year the same thing happens to it: the digital read out area will fog up because of the moisture and high humidity.
I ended up getting new meters at no cost to me. I use the Bayer Ascentia Breeze and have called Bayer but they say it is just a random problem and should not happen again.

the resorts will provide a sharps container at no cost if you advise them.

:thumbsup2

We've taken 2 trips in August and 1 in July and my husband didn't have any problems with his meter being carried around in the heat.

I hesitate to disagree, but I wouldn't leave your glucometer in the car. The heat index in your car will far exceed anything you'll encounter in a backpack or a locker. If you take it in to the First Aid or Baby Care center I wouldn't be surprised if they will hold it there for you (in air conditioned comfort). Maybe ask at Guest Services and tell them your concerns. I'm guessing you'll be ok taking it into the parks, but I'm even more sure Disney can give you a steer on how to maintain your testing safely if you talk to the right person.
