Glucose Meter & Testing at the Parks

My glucose meter says not to expose it to extreme temps. However, we will be at Disney for 2 weeks in July. I have read from other posts that it is a good idea to test more often, but that would mean keeping my meter with me all day.

What has been your experience with your glucose meters and what do you do with them? Do you leave them at the medical center and go back there to test or do you keep it with you throughout the day? If you do keep it with you, have you had any problems with the functioning of the meter due to the heat?

We've been 3x in the last year with my 4 yr old who is diabetic (one of the times in July) and we carried his meter everywhere with no problems. We tested him quite often in the heat and with the exercise and didn't have readings that would indicate a malfunction.

If you use insulin I would suggest keeping it in a cool place like in the fridge at the first aid station in the parks or in a cooler, Frio pack, etc.

We've had over 30 trips since DS2 was diagnosed but few have been in the summer.

But on one of those summer trips, we did have trouble with a meter. It fogged over. We picked up a new one at a pharmacy but if we go again in the summer, I will take a backup from home.

I agree with Carol about keeping the insulin cool even those kinds that are supposed to be OK at room temp. WDW is not room temp in the summer. A Frio or Medcool works well. We have also just used an insulated small lunch bag with frozen packs when we have a full refig at BCV. This won't work as well with the hotel refrigs without the freezers of course. And actually the Medcool would have the same problem now. The little freezer sections in the old hotel refrigerators were large enough for those packs but no more freezers at least in the new refrigerators we've had at the Polynesian.

I was at Target today and saw instant cool packs in the $1 store. I wonder if those would work? At least they are cheap.

Our monitor indicates when it is too hot, and may not test accurately. Perhaps you know best how your BGL reacts to heat.

All the walking around the Parks usually drives our numbers lower. But heat forces the numbers higher. Take great care, and test often. And enjoy yourself.
