Is it a gimmick for Disney to make more money? Or is it an Imagineering feat that has saved us all from viewfinders of electronics?

There's a thread somewhere else (those of you who read there, have probably read this), where we were talking about the nuisance of iPads, iPhones and other devices with displays at nighttime shows.

I mentioned that... is it not necessarily an accident that "Glow with the Show" encompasses everyone with the "ears" in an effort to take away the distraction of all the viewfinders and such?

A gimmick to make more money as well as a visual nuisance during the shows. Probably worse than the tablet people.

Here's the thing, Glow with the Show is awesome...IF everyone (or the vast majority) in the crowd are wearing them. The video of the premier at World of Color was very cool indeed! But, nobody buys them or wears them, so you end up with spots here and there, plus all the other glow toys that are actually brighter than the ears, all waving about, and they become completely irrelevant.

It was a good idea in theory. Maybe if they could come up with something cheaper that has the same effect they might have better adoption.

How about a free app for the smart devices that is sync'd to glow.

:)

And this is from the debut at Fantasmic to celebrate Fant's 15th anniversary:

Cheaper and MORE COMFORTABLE TO WEAR. I bought a pair of the ears last fall when they debuted at WDW, and I wore them once - they're heavy, the chin strap is not comfortable at all, they balance poorly on your head, and the hat part feels badly sized for an adult - I have a fairly average sized head, and I did have a CM confirm I didn't get a kids' pair or something, lol.

I don't plan on taking them with me on future trips because I won't wear them during the day, and I don't want to carry them around all day until the nighttime shows happen either. :confused3

So yeah, I like the idea, but not the implementation.

A friend had a great idea. It would cost little to nothing to have all glowing toys have the technology in it. Think about how many glow toys are bought every single night. They would be less annoying if they linked up with the show and then you would get the great affect you get from a whole audience of glow with the show hats because there would be a ton more things in sync.

Also as I have discovered with my glow with the show ears they have a default glow pattern so if kids want to take it home and have it glow it will.

This !!!! We wore them once as well !!! They are way too clumsy/heavy, and kept falling off our heads !!
Now it just sits in the house--- we didnt even take it along last week when we went to WDW !!!

I personally think it's a money-grab and I found them very distracting at World of Color (which I think sucks anyway so maybe I'm not the best person to ask).
