than $20 a month? can be text only, but budget here is tight.

thanks.

Look into page plus cellular. They may have something that works for you. They have a $12 plan that is 250 talk/250 texts, and you can add a cash balance so that you can use more texts. It would probably be less than $20/month.

Depends on the carrier that the phone is tied to. Most will require a data plan that cost cost an additional $30 a month.

gophone @ AT&T ... prepaid / non contract

$25.00 / 30 days = 250 minutes and unlimited text

What carrier do you currently have, and what company did the phone orginally come from? The phone is usually tied to the company unless you can get them to unlock it.

If you have Verizon, you should be able to share data on a family plan, an additional line usually costs $9.99 plus the taxes (comes to about $15 a month total on my family plan), however any changes to your family plan will mean you lose unlimited data if you already have it.

You might be able to put that iphone on a prepaid plan, IF you can get it unlocked and it's comptible with the nextwork of your new chosen carrier.

got it unlocked. was with tmobile. thanks all. i'm clueless as to what to do wit it.

What does she need in a phone? How many minutes? How many text messages? Does she need data?????

I have my 13 year old on SpotMobile. He only needs a min. amount of talk as he uses his phone mostly as an ipod touch in wifi.

I refill about $10 every 3 months. Out of that, talk is .10/min and texting is .05/min.

We just upgraded our two DDs' phones to iPhones with Verizon. The cost was $40 per line for a smartphone. It was $30 per line for a regular phone. We share unlimited minutes and texts.

We downgraded our (mine and DH's) data plans and now all share 4GB of data, which we pay for in addition to the line charges. The end result was an increase in our bill of about $30 per month.

It is my understanding that you can not activate an iPhone without activating data, so I wonder if it would be cheaper to get a regular pay as you go phone.

I don't think you're going to be able to do what you want (at that price point) with your current iPhone.
I'd look into buying a cheaper phone through Virgin Mobile and do their pay-as-you go plan (or similar company like Tracphone). I pay less than $20 a month to VM and use it infrequently for phone and texting on the plan. When I get below $5 in my plan they automatically add $20. Or you could use top-up cards instead if you don't want your credit card on file. I don't pay for data at all.

As for the iphone, it will require a data plan no matter who you connect it with.

If you're looking for a new phome and service, go with a pay as you go with the carrier that has the best reception. All the major networks have them, and phones start at roughly $20 for a basic flip.

You mean they don't need a phone, it can be only for texting? DH disabled the phone part on our old iphones and the kids use them as ipods. Free texting and phone calls with some apps if on wifi. But if they are using without wifi, that's not very helpful... :)
