Giving Christmas Gifts early

I have a girlfriend who gives her young adult children their Christmas presents early. I am talking two to three weeks early. Her son will come over wearing a new jacket and clothes, and tell me this is what he got for Xmas... that is OK, except Xmas is another month away and we did not even have Turkey Day yet...

It seems like more and more people are doing this....

No, never heard of that.

And don't think I would ever consider doing that except in the case of my 93yo grandmother. I'm going to see her at Thanksgiving and not Xmas this year. I have been planning to give her a family photo album I've been working on & may just give it to her at Thanksgiving. (It's awful to say, but she is 93yo....I don't know how much time she's got).

diasyduck just covered the only reasons I've ever seen it done.

1 - family lives distant or is spread out, and you have Christmas whenever you can all get together, even if it's November, or even July.

2 - someone might not still be around in another month, so they celebrate early for this person's sake.

I don't understand otherwise, unless the gift was something the person *needed* and the parent didn't want them to have to wait another 5 weeks for it. I'm thinking of a laptop computer for a college student, or even a winter coat for a new grad struggling to find work, but it seems strange if there's no reason to do so. To each his own, but I still like to have something to open on Christmas!

I have done it plenty of times.

This past weekend, I gave my DS his gift early. It is a full length wetsuit. We are new to CA and he has been surfing all summer. The water is colder now and impossible for him to continue to surf without the full length suit and the booties. DH&I said, absolutely you can have it now. He surfs every eve after work and all weekend long. It is the only thing we will get him. $400.00 for suit and booties.
