DH and my kids(6 and 4) will be in Vero Beach in February and would like to check out Miami for the day. We are planning on leaving early on a Monday morning and return around 3 or 4 o'clock.

I have seached the boards for information on South Beach and I get the sense that many Miami residents don't recommend it for families and some people just didn't feel too comfortable there.

If you drove to Miami from VB, how was the drive? What did you do on your trip and would you recommend it?

Thanks!

too many drugs and other things that I don't think you want your kids to see.

most people are not born thin (there are some that are) so they have to take things to stay that way.

it is not a life style one would encourage to their children.

As far as the drive, it is terrible. Once you get down towards Ft. Lauderdale it becomes bumper to bumper and crawling on I95. It is not driving for the faint of heart. Miami is the place I've come closest to being the victim of road rage. And I still don't know what I did wrong to cause the person to get mad at me.

The driving/traffic is the pits between VB and Miami.

But Miami is not just South Beach - if you want to see Miami with your family, why not pick some family friendly attractions? I haven't been lately, but I'm sure there's quite a few if you look for them. Miami is a very large, cosmopolitan city with good areas, bad areas, adult venues and family-friendly venues.

Honestly, I'm a Florida native and have no desire to ever spend any amount of time in Miami. I think you'll regret day-tripping there.

Why not try Cape Canaveral with your little ones?

There's nothing wrong with South Beach, and I wouldn't let the comments so far keep you away.

I've lived in Miami since 1971, and I go to South Beach a couple of times a month...usually either for the beach itself, or to eat dinner. I also worked as a cop here for 25 years. Here are my impressions on the topics raised so far.

Body Parts
If you are offended by topless bathing, don't go to the nude beach. If you are offended by skimpy and outrageously-packaged bikinis, you might want to avoid the state of Florida altogether.

Drugs
The fact that a girl is six feet tall, thin, and incredibly beautiful does not make her a drug addict. She might be...but more likely, she's just your average supermodel. I've seen a lot of people drinking on South Beach, but I've never seen anyone using drugs. I'm sure some do -- some do everywhere -- but you won't see them lying in the street here like you do in some European cities.

Driving :scared1:
Wolfpack Fan is right - the traffic is bad. BAD. It's not so much that there is a huge volume of traffic (we have a fraction of the traffic of Atlanta, for example). The problem here is the drivers.

About 40% of our drivers here are tourists who a)don't know where they are, b) don't know where they are going, c) don't know how to get from where they don't know they are to where they don't know they're going, AND (not or) d) are not good drivers in the first place. This group is why you'll see a lot of bumper stickers saying, "When I retire, I'm going to move North and DRIVE SLOW!" This is also the only group who are not armed.

About 40% of our drivers are recent immigrants -- many of them literally driving a car for the first time in their lives. Their average age seems to be about 78. They're doing the best they can, but they can be exciting at times.

The other 20% are the more or less normal drivers, and they will display the full range of driving skill that any other population would display -- some good, some bad.

There are some funny driving practices that are common in Miami, but I'll spare you. Dave Barry does it better anyway. But suffice to say, Miami is an amusing place to drive!

Difficult driving is a given, and road rage is a possibliity. South Florida drivers actually are not nearly as aggressive as say, Boston or New York drivers. The problem here is not aggression -- it's lack of skill.

We don't really have gun battles in the street, but you'll sometimes see someone rudely cut off. I don't do that, but most of the time when I see it, I understand why it happened.

We stayed at South Beach for a few nights last year. I didn't see any crime, drug abuse, guns, etc., but lots of people walking their dogs. Did see a couple of people who appeared homeless. But they wern't bothering anybody. Nothing at all like you'd see in San Francisco.

I will say there probably isn't much for children as it appears more adult oriented: Restuaruants, night life, etc.

The beach is nice, and there's a nice boardwalk you can walk for quite a ways.

I agree, the drive from Orlando to Miami is the pits. We are from the S FL area (just N of WPB) and it has gotten so much worse since we left.

Just wondering, what is in Miami that you want to check out?

I have Stayed at the Lowes in South Beach for a week. The beach area itself is quite nice. A vew blocks west is another story. There are some real bad places there. I have lived all my life in Southern California and have driven thru Compton, Watts, and other parts of South Central LA, but nothing I have seen NOTHING, compares to the slums in Miami. Just stay along the Eastern Shore and Barrier islands and you should be fine. Traffic is really bad, and I do not recommed it for a day trip.

The areas dwelty is talking about are actually quite a ways from South Beach. They are across the causeways, all the way on the other side of Biscayne Bay, and northwest of downtown on the west side of I-95. In regular traffic, you're talking 20-30 minutes drive time. I usually caution vistiors not to get off of I-95 anywhere between NW 163 Street and downtown. (I drive through those areas all the time, but I know where I'm going and what to do if I get uncomfortable.) I also tell folks not to get off the Airport Expressway (SR 112) anywhere between the airport and I-95.

I actually think South Central is the best comparison to the bad areas of Miami. There are a LOT of similarities -- most of it built since the 60's, more single-family homes, not the highrise housing projects you have up north. The urban ghettos of the NE and Midwest are much worse than either Miami's bad areas or South Central LA.

I would agree with other posters, though -- from Vero to Miami and back is a long drive for a day trip to South Beach. I think twice about my 45 minute drive to SoBe! I might do it to see the Everglades or the Keys, but I wouldn't make the trip just to see South Beach.

Good question! We would like to see the Art Deco architecture, people watch and check out the beaches. Hmm..might have to rethink this trip. Thanks!

Thank you for the information. We are thinking of going on Monday, February 16th which is President's Day and that may mean more traffic than usual(which already sounds bad)! Thank you for the information!

Well, what you are wanting to see is pretty unique to the area. And I would think that being a holiday would make travel much easier down 95. Happy planning!

Thank you for all of the comments. I think that DH and I are going to stick to Vero Beach and just relax. We can save Miami for the future when the kids are older.

Not really more traffic. It's a holiday -- no school, nobody going to work -- should be a LOT less traffic.

The traffic ON South Beach might be more because of the holiday, but the drive down should be easier.

Well...all three would certainly be here. The people watching would probably be at it's peak, because that's the peak of our tourist season, and it's also the peak of the film/fashion photo-shoot season.

I don't know what your schedule is, but if you have the time, I'd look into making an overnight trip down and hitting some of the other interesting sights -- Everglades National Park, Jungle Island, the Miami Childrens' Museum, Miami MetroZoo. See the sights, take an airboat ride, see something different.

There's a lot to see here. The issue is not lack of things to do, or your family's safety. The real issue is whether it's worth 2-3 hours in each direction to see what you want to see.

Yes, you are right! But I meant more beach traffic and traffic in town. Thank you!

We have been to Miami a few times, and have always enjoyed our trips there. Some of the comments on this thread are quite amusing. Don't let them deter you from being adventurous, and stepping outside that Disney bubble. Yes, we saw a few topless women, but nothing vulgar. It is a very cosmopolitan city, and there are people from all over the world visiting and/or living there. The beaches are great, the ocean is beautiful, and we've had some of the best meals in Florida down there. It's definitely worth the trip, but I wouldn't try to do it in a day. As suggested, it's definitely worth a night or two. The art deco district is pretty cool.

We have always taken the turnpike. It's a bit pricey, but we have never run into traffic.

There are two cities in Florida worth traveling to just to eat. Miami has the most variety and world-class quality. Tampa has fewer choices, but some very fine restaurants.

This is quite true. I ate a several good places in South Beach. In fact there was an Emeril's Resteraunt right in our hotel. It was one of the best meals I ever had. We also went across Biscane Bay to an outdoor mall on the water near the cruise ship terminals and ate some excellent Cuban food. (JimMIA might know the name of it),
