Give me some renting tips

Before I post to the rent/trade board, can you give me some tips for renting out my points. I just closed on my Boardwalk points yesterday, so I need to wait a couple weeks before I have access to the points. I have 156 that will expire 02-01-09, but I don't have travel plans before that.

I'm sure those of you who have rented out your points have a lot of tips for how to go about this process. I would love to hear some of them!

First of all - welcome to DVC!!!! You're going to love it!

1) I would suggest using a contract that protects both you and the renter. I have one that I got from another DIS/DVC member and would be happy to share it with you if you'd like - just pm me.

2) Get 2-3 resort choices upfront, that way if the renter's 1st choice is booked, you can check the others while on the same phone call and you aren't wasting time going back and forth with the renter and MS.

Be sure you thoroughly read and understand the posting rules for the DIS's Rent/Trade board.

Do not make a reservation first and then try to rent it. For one thing you won't be allowed to use our boards until 30 days from the check-in date. Also you would be restricting rentals only to people going for those exact dates.

Preview the Reservations Availability board here on the DIS. It's unofficial and only records availability as reported by DISboard members, but it can still be helpful before making a lot of calls to MS.

if you must rent these points

then either get a reservation before hand - like Caskbill suggested.

keeping in mind that most of Nov, dec and jan are gone already.

or put them on sale -

like $8 or less per point.

even then you might find trouble even getting a reservation.

BTW I didn't mean to make it sound like I was new to DVC. I bought in 1999 for the first time and just bought my third contract. But I have never rented my points or had any unused points for that matter! I just don't happen to need any this winter, so I have an opportunity to try that.
