I have a tile floor in my kitchen. There is a spot about 2-3 inches long between two tiles where the grout is chipping out. The builder left a bag of grout in the basement.

What do I do with it? What type of tools do I need? How do I mix the grout? What type of consistency do I want? How careful do I have to be about getting the grout on the top of the tiles?

Any help you can offer would be great. I know I can do this on my own. I hate to call a repairman for such a small job, and yet I fear if it is not taken care of, the situation will get worse.

I've only used the tube type of grout - around the bath tub, etc.

Are there any directions on the bag? If not, maybe you can look for a home improvement/repair site on the internet that will give you the correct info..

Sorry I can't be of more help..

Remove all the loose grout from the problem area. Mix up a small amout of grout. There should be directions on the bag. Since this is a small job I would just wipe the new grout in the crack with my finger. Smooth it out with your finger and wipe off the excess with a damp sponge.

on grouting. I replaced 11 tiles that cracked in my front entry.
It can be done by the homeowner........:D

Pretty easy to remove the grout either with a hand held rasp, or get a power tip for a DREMEL or drill (Looks like a mini-grind stone). Then mix up some more grout and smooth over with a damp sponge.

However....there's no way you'll be able to match the grout exactly.

I'm pretty sure that once you spot repair the grout, you'll want to redo the whole thing like I did. Good Luck.

It is very much like iceing a cake. Don't worry about getting grout on the tile, that is how it is done. When you do a whole floor you put grout then set the tile then cover the top with grout until it goes inbetween the tiles. Most of the time is spent cleaning up the tile afterwards. Just keep wiping it with a damp sponge. You will see the residue on top and just keep wiping it clean until it looks shiney again. If you go to Home Depot they will be able to demonstrate exactly how to do it right in the store. :D

You may need to dig a little more of the existing grout out - which you can do with a grout knife (Home Depot). You'll want to mix the grout until its of Peanut Butter consistency. Its very easy. You'll do fine. You'll usually have to wash the area with warm water and a tile/grout sponge (Depot again) for a few days in a row to remove the grout haze from the area. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thanks everybody. This helps a lot. I love the ideas and now feel confident that I can tackle this on Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes, Tina.
