I'm sure many people saw the news on Good Morning America - if not, the new official Disney blog has all the info on this new 2010 program.

I'm super excited about this and can't wait to get my family involved. I'd been wanting to get them together and make our first visit to Give Kids the World, and now there's even more incentive than the obvious benefits of helping others out. Hopefully it will start a wave of volunteerism that continues long after the promotion has ended...

What are everyone's thoughts on it?

And, here is another (very cute) Disney link to the promo:

And, an Orlando Sentinel article:

Disney launching "Give a day, get a day" promotion
posted by Jason Garcia on Sep 29, 2009 8:19:33 AM

After a year in which it let guests into its parks for free on their birthdays, the Walt Disney Co. will hand out more free tickets in 2010 -- but only after making people earn them.

Disney this morning announced a new marketing campaign, "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day," through which it will give one-day, one-park tickets to people who volunteer at select charities.

With the program, which replaces the company's "Free on Your Birthday" campaign this year, Disney is continuing its strategy of using discounts and promotions to lure vacationers amid a still-challenging economic environment. But it also marries the approach with a socially conscious message.

Disney says its goal is to get 1 million people to volunteer a day of community service in 2010. It also says the supply of free tickets will be limited: The promotion will run until the last ticket is distributed or Dec. 15 of next year, whichever is earlier
.

So instead of getting a free day just for being there on your b-day, you have to work for it?

The Disney World website has a link off of their homepage where you can get all the details, rules, etc.

Similiar to the current "Celebrate" promotion, if you are an AP holder or multi-ticket day holder, you can opt for a FastPass, special collectors Mickey Ears with speical pins, or donate your ticket to charity!

I would definitely donate to charity. Maybe it would give some child and there family the opportunity to visit the place we all love!

My only concern is that in order to make the program effective and easily tracked they need to limit the number of opportunity organizations. I volunteer well over 100 hours a year to a grass roots, local not for profit that helps low income often first generational students get into college, I also do other events through out the year. Most likely because most of the programs I work with are local, they will not be captured within this program, although they are 501c3 organizations.

It's a balance in my eyes of what I spend my time on because small organizations are often overlooked for the ones that actually have marketing budgets and can advertise (ie. Heart Association).

I definately give a thumbs up to Disney for encouraging volunteerism though!

I believe that's what the "Cheers for Volunteers" Tour that the Muppets are linked to is all about. They are touring all over the US, Puerto Rico and Canada and visiting local grassroots organizations getting people involved that way as well. So hopefully, the organization you are a part of will be included in the list. :)

I've written a bit more about the official links and such on my blog, if anyone's interested. :)

Great idea from Disney! There are many non-profits that can use the help since donations are way down from previous years.

I think that depends on the organization, some organizations (like the two I work with a lot) are actually showing revenues from donations, grants and sponsorships that are higher then the past two years.

I think people are targeting their donations to more local organizations that they can see the impact of rather then larger organizations.

I am so unbelievably excited over this, I just signed up our Non-profit up for this!!!! I hope we get accepted!!!!!!! We already have 400 active volunteers!!!!

Disney and making a difference, now that is magic!!!!

If you call helping others who are less fortunate than you "work" then yes!

You're gonna have to work a little for that free Disney ticket! :thumbsup2

its a good promotion for the usa residents
but do Disney forget thousands of people travle from the UK to go to Disney and yet we are excluded again? almost seems we arnt wanted.

Or they see that these small "gimmicks" pale in light to some of the other promotions/discount offers you received (14 day passes, free dining, etc.) and would rarely alter someones decisions to go, or encourage them to. We already know statistically, people outside of the US do tend to visit more subsequent days, so the benefit isn't that great.

First, the webpages for this are annoyingly overloaded with stuff. They don't need all the bells and whistles to promote this.

Second, this is just another effort by Disney to get people to the parks. So they don't have to pay one day of their ticket. They are still going to pay for more days, hotel rooms, food, souvenirs etc. It is a marketing ploy dressed up in do-gooder clothing.

It still all comes down to the money. Sorry I'm not jumping up and down over this promotion. Volunteering for the sake of a Disney ticket is the wrong reason to volunteer.

For those who endure through the promo, there is a contest for a trip to Disney that you can enter daily.

Disney is making out on this one big time. They get to write off all those hours that you all are going to work and all their giving up is a 1 day pass. It is a great deal if you live in the 1 day range of WDW. However if you use this on a 1 week vacation your saving about $2 for a days work. Not sure about you but I already work for beans in the USAF and I just don't see any benefits for me with this program. Sorry to bust your bubble, and I love Disney.:confused3

Of course it's a marketing ploy. They are, after all, a business. It's no different a marketing ploy than the 'get-in-free-on-your-birthday' campaign. In the same sense, they know no one comes to the park by themselves on their birthday. They're making a lot of money off of a single day's worth of birthdays - every single day. That's how a business operates. Their goal IS to make money. As much as you'd like to think Disney's one and only goal in life was to make you happy, the guy had to make money in order to keep it going. Remember, Disney's profit is down!

I see nothing wrong, and in fact, I love the idea, that they are combining their "marketing ploy" with something that can actually affect even a day's worth of volunteerism in someone. If you ask any of the non-profits involved, I'm sure that they're head over their heels to hear that they could be seeing thousands more volunteers in their organizations. A lot of them might never get any kind of recognition without a name like Disney to back it. I'm sure that they're thankful for even a day's worth of extra help.

Disney is making a great move here. I can't wait to volunteer, even if, as yekcoh_99 put it, I'm only gaining $2 a day worth of savings. Sure, there may be no benefits for you, but I think this one is meant to go a little beyond "me" with this campaign.

Trust me, I don't think their goal is to "trick" you (marketing ploy) into have a Disney vacation. You're going to have one regardless. They're just giving you an extra incentive to do it, while trying to get some work done, too.

Edited to Add: I personally love this idea because it appears as if you get to choose your freebie day. While I loved the birthday campaign, it was hard to get people to come with me on MY birthday (a random Tuesday) if they didn't have an annual pass, a day off, lived too far, etc.

With this one, families and friends can volunteer together (or not together), and then plan a vacation (whether it be a day or a week) and everyone can go together! Excellent. :thumbsup2

I take offense to this. Not wanted? Are you kidding?

UK residents have their own special Disney website, their own special Disney ticket prices/packages (where they can purchase their Disney vacation in pounds sterling), and practically their own airport, Sanford, (save for 1 American airline that flies there), which has signs outside of their terminals reminding visitors to look to the left so they don't get hit by a car.

Does Alton Towers have a US-only website with special ticketing/packages (payable in US dollars) for Americans only? Is there an airport nearby that serves mainly American airlines? No.

On top of that the Publix on 192 west of AK carries a large assortment of British products, and the Perkins Pancake House also on 192 west of AK has free UK Telegraph newspapers for UK patrons to read. Orlando Sentinel not good enough?

Let's not forget the various British pubs in the area and even a British mortgage company.

Disney has the "American Idol" attraction at Hollywood Studios, based on the British X Factor program, and UK residents can even participate.

Is this Central Florida or UK South?

Frankly, I'm surprised that Disney hasn't petitioned the US government to make us all switch over and drive on the left.

I signed up the non-profit I work with the day they announced the promotion...got an e-mail that they confirmed getting my e-mail....still waiting...I hate waiting.
We have a healthy volunteer program, I hope they consider us...people keep asking if I signed up and I answer them yes...but we are still waiting...

Did I mention I hate waiting(this is magnified when it is Disney related)...but as least waiting means there is still hope...:rolleyes1

I forget where I read this... I will try to remember, but thought I read that if you already have tickets, that there will be an option of donating your tickets to those who are deserving or get a special set of mickey ears with pins. I will have to search around, I am now thinking I saw this on Disneys site itself...I will see if I can find the link.

O.K. here is the link and I copy and pasted the section:

We're excited about this! We were already planning on spending the month of February in the Kissimmee area... but not planning on visiting any theme parks. (We're just happy to see the sun!)

But when I heard about this program, I began to get excited. For us, it's the difference between spending one great day at the Magic Kingdom and not going to Disney at all.

For the six of us, we're going to be saving about $500 on tickets alone! When I heard we could bring in our own water bottles and refill them throughout the day, I realized we could save another $100 on beverage costs.

We'll try to eat on the cheap... no sit down, character dinners or anything. So for about $100, our family of six gets a memorable day full of fun. I'm psyched!!
