Give a Day, Get a Day

Just did our service today. We signed up to donate items for children in foster care to an organization in Wall, NJ. There was a great turnout lots of people, including ourselves, donated more than the required 5 items per person.

Help! I signed up for an opportunity that also had things for kids to do through a local food bank. I knew my son was too young so I got a babysitter for when we volunteer. I checked today to see if it was still available and now it says a child 6-9 MUST accompany us to receive our tickets.

It did NOT say this when I signed up and I have not received any notification that I can not volunteer. What should I do? I emailed them but I have already booked our rooms, etc and I am going to be so disappointed if I cant volunteer..our area doesnt have that many opportunites and we have a 3yr old so we are trying to do this ona tight budget as well.

What would you do? Do you think I could try to do project linus? Our area doesnt have it...

We dropped our items off today also. We were there pretty early and I was impressed with the turnout and amount of items already dropped off. A win-win for everyone involved.

DD11 and I are signed up for our local food bank. They have a program that volunteers load up backpacks with food for under privledged kids and the kids take the backpacks home on the weekends so they will have food.

We have a month until we do it, thanks to GAD, they were really booked up with volunteers.

If it would be easier for you, there are several Project Linus programs that allow you to send your blankets. There are several different threads going around. And be sure to look at the requirements. I mailed mine to a chapter in KY that just required one blanket per person. I think someone mentioned a chapter near Orlando that would let you mail them. Other chapters asked for quilted or crocheted blankets only, or 6 fleece blankets per person. Sometimes it added up where, after postage, you would be better off buying your own day passes. It is hard to make ANY blanket for under $10, so just keep that in mind for your budget.

Concering the blankets with the Linus Project is there suppose to be another step after you cut to make the fringe? Is anyone doing an extra step after that? Also are you making the fringes on all 4 sides?

I just mailed off my package for the GAD program! YAY! My family collected can tabs. 2 gallon size bags filled with tabs = 4 happy family members with vouchers! It was so easy!

What section was this under? I went looking for it and couldnt find it. Thanks so much.

We did this yesterday too. There were lots of people there when we went. I was surprised that I already got a "thank you" email from Hands On. Now just to wait for the vouchers.

Modern Woodmen of America are collecting them. I searched Atlanta area. Good luck!

Maybe I'm slow (LOL) but what heading was it under? I am looking on "give a day, get a day". Thanks so much, this would really help. I have a 15 with CP and dont have alot of time on my hands but still want to do something..

We got our email too! I was very impressed on how quickly things went. From the time I got on line till I left was only 15 minutes.

It really depends on the chapter you're working through. Some seem willing to accept just about anything you want to do, others have very specific requirements.

Maybe start by taking a look at the Idaho PL chapter website, I think their general fleece finishing instructions are pretty good:

http://www.linusidaho.org/finishafleeceblanket.htm

Personally I usually use double thickness, finish all 4 sides, and knot or do a pull through bunny ear on mine.
But that may not be what the chapter you're working through wants.

I don' have the zip code, but I am helping a fellow Disney friend in Alabama save can tabs for the Ronald McDonald house for her son's GAD project. It took her nearly a month to find a project for her 15 year old DS!

My 15-yo dd has been doing this all year for a group she's involved in at school (FCCLA)

Wow that's a really good volunteer project!! DH and I were out in the rain taking down christmas lights at our local Zoo from 9 to 4.... we got a lunch hour break... earned our ticket!! :goodvibes

Have either one of you got your vouchers yet? My status still says

Pending Verification
The date of the volunteer opportunity has passed. Verification that the volunteer has completed their activity may take up to 2 weeks.

Just wondering since others are getting their vouchers very quick.

Thanks!

We did our volunteering on a Saturday. We recieved our vouchers the following Thursday! So, a bit less than a week for verification.

Our family volunteered for a National Bicycling League BMX event in our town. There were participants from around the country and it was an incredible day. My husband was a finish line marshall. My son was a runner, and my daughter and I helped compile race results and helped with first aid. Before the event we also passed out surveys.

We worked for 6.5 hours, watched some incredible athletes from around the country, and had a fun time. The atmosphere was very positive and the racers, supporters, and fans were all encouraging of one another. The positive aspects of good sports abounded. It was a very family friendly event, and we may return for more races in the future.

In addition, they provided all the volunteers T-shirts and free lunches. Wow, what a great day.:cool1:

So, if anyone else is considering doing a NBL race event, we found it to be very enjoyable. I cannot believe they will give us tickets to Disney for having this much fun.

We are volunteering at an after school program for 1 1/2 hrs on Wed. this week. I am looking forward to that as I am a volunteer to administer and beginning an after school program in our area. I already have the free rental agreement until we get any grants.

We one day will have our own lunch program so great experience for me.

I just applied for another opportunity and hope we get it. I applied to clean up the beach but never heard back. Since the site says they are approaching one million volunteers I hope we get it. This one is to plant a garden for a local boys and girls club.

It's really been hard to find an opportunity that will let my DD10 help out. I think since we are so close to DLR many people will be using the vouchers to upgrade to an AP (that's what we are doing). So many of the opportunities are already booked or they want you to do too much. (Organizing a book drive and getting 200 children's books for each volunteer, organizing a toiletries drive and collecting 100 lbs. of items for each volunteer, etc.) I would have loved to have baked some cookies for Habit for Humanity, or something else like that.

I hope we get the garden one. :thumbsup2 I mentioned we had gardening experience as well as our own tools. It says it will be 6 hours, so that's not too bad. Of course, not as easy as 1-1/2 hours-that would be a dream!

my daughter & I signed up for the Linus Project & I put down on our dates as March 21, my question is = if I get finished before the date would that be ok??
I am thinking we will finish the blankets earlier than expected..thanks for your help
