I was doing some preliminary checking for the opportunities available in my area with the network Disney is using. Out of 26 pages of opportunities less than five will work for my family and there were no opportunities for children under 12. (I live in the Dallas area - not a small town by any means)

I have a 15, 13, and 12 year old and I was really looking forward to volunteering together, but this may be harder than I thought.

I wonder if they just dont have everything set yet...

I hope i can find something here that I can do - I am disabled, so anything that is outdoors really won't work well. Oh well - gotta wait til the 1st. But I am still hopeful! Hope something works out for you!

I am looking into this as well. I have actually found a couple of things that my 6 y/o can do with me and my 13 y/o. I haven't actually looked into whether they will fit into my schedule or not.

How did you find the info, if you don't mind my asking?

My family already does a lot of volunteering - but nothing that works with the Disney thing. :confused3 It's very frustrating. But oh well, it won't stop the volunteering that we do.

Go to the Hands On Network:

http://www.handsonnetwork.org/

Scroll down the page and on the right hand side it will say "Search Volunteer Opportunities"

Enter your zip or town and search.

The information listed will tell you the opportunity, organization, interest (Animals & Environment, Health, Civic, etc) Location, Distance, Minimum Age, and Date.

Now these may not be the exact opportunities that Disney will have but at least it will give you an idea of the organizations looking for help and the type of opportunities available. :)

The only thing in my area at all - everything else is an hour and a half away minimum over mountain roads - is a tax preparation volunteer program and you must be 18. Give a day is not an inclusive program for those of us in rural areas

I found a volunteer opportunity that I can do together with my son.:) It's a beach clean up. The minimum age is 8. I'm happy. I was hoping to find something that the two of us could do together.

The closest volunteer opportunity for us is over 40 miles away and we live in an urban area. I looked at one that said it was 25 mile away when in actuality it is 125 miles away.

Closest thing for my kids is over 60 miles away.

What is funny, I found two activities that I'm not old enough to do.

The minimum age is 55.:confused3

Close thing my area is 2 hour drive. I type in TN and everything for Georgia came up.

LOTS of the ones here are that way! What in the world!

some of the opportunities near me include "minimum age = 55"

and a lot of the opportunities the volunteer commitment is for 6 months (2 - 4 days a week!)

Interesting idea, I will have to explore it further!

Wow-30, 40 miles-that would be a big improvement for me. The closest one is 100 miles away.

Uh... wha? ~starts to panic~

The Give a Day program is the only way we'll be able to visit Disney. I've been planning on it for months.

For six of us, it's a savings of nearly $500. For that, I'd be willing to drive an hour away. Hopefully I will be able to find something for children ages 9, 10, 12 and 15.

Gonna go check it out...

I would not panic until the program is all set up. It starts January 1, so maybe there will be more organizations listed at that time. I looked and had hundreds listed in our area(central NC) but a lot seemed like working in the hospital gift shop and things like that. I am hoping the local animal shelters will participate, b/c that's something DS15 and I would enjoy doing together.

Anyone know how many volunteer hours constitutes a "day"? I looked into the options for our area and most of the things that the kids could do with me are only 3 or 4 hours. I assume you have to do more than that to get the ticket, but I wonder exactly how many hours are required.

I hope so
The ONE listed in my area (Boise Idaho) is working for the US Postal Service sorting mail :confused3 Really!!!
